Charlie Gleason’s South Shore

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Charlie Gleason’s South Shore
Saturday August 20th, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Stetson House Barn, 514 Hanover Street

Charles Gleason (1880-1979) was a Hanover resident and dry goods peddler
who kept a remarkable documentary record of small town life on the South
Shore. Beginning in 1908, Gleason used a $2 Brownie box camera to
photograph his family, neighbors, and clients in Hanover and the
surrounding towns. He traveled first with a brightly painted green and
yellow wagon and then on a bicycle, taking photos as he went. Gleason put
his photographs into scrapbooks and carefully labeled each person and
scene, creating a unique and fascinating source for local history. Views of
Hanover, Norwell, Pembroke, Marshfield, and Scituate are featured in the
scrapbooks, along with his stories, commentary, and humor.

The Hanover Historical Society has conserved eleven of the scrapbooks and
is now involved in a digitization and transcribing project to make these
available to the public. Join the Historical Society on Saturday, August
20th, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. to view the scrapbooks and learn more about
the project.
See the South Shore as Charlie Gleason saw it a century ago.
