Dear fellow Hanoverians:<\/p>\n
On Friday, December 10th, at 7:00 p.m. (rain\/snow date is December 12th) the
\nSmith Family is hosting their 7th and last annual tree lighting for juvenile
\ndiabetes. Come enjoy the lights, music, raffles and treats. They are
\nlocated at 428 King Street in Hanover. If you have never been to this event
\nand have been meaning to go and support diabetes research, this is the year
\nto go as it will not be repeated again!<\/p>\n
The Smith’s son Michael was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes on December
\n9th, 2003. Since then, the Smith Family has lit a Christmas tree in their
\nyard (along with lots of other decorations and lights) to help raise money
\nand make people aware of Type 1 diabetes. Raffles will include luxury suite
\nseats at a Patriots game, Red Sox tickets, and an Apple IPad, just to name a
\nfew. Over the past 6 years they have raised approximately $18,000 with the
\nhelp of lots of family, friends and kind and generous residents of Hanover.
\nEach donation gets us closer to finding a cure. 100% of the proceeds from
\nthe tree lighting will go to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).<\/p>\n
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease. In a child with Type 1 diabetes
\n(juvenile diabetes) the pancreas does not produce insulin, a hormone
\nnecessary to sustain life. Without insulin the sugar in the blood can’t be
\nused. It builds up in the bloodstream even while the body is starved for
\nenergy. A person with Type 1 diabetes must take one or more injections of
\ninsulin daily to stay alive. Insulin, however, is not a cure. It is only a
\nmeans of controlling the disease. <\/p>\n
So bundle up and come enjoy the lights, music and atmosphere and get in the
\nChristmas spirit! If you can’t make it on the 10th, the Smith family
