Ellen Witter-Harrington, Director of Pupil Personnel Services, along with
\nstaff from the elementary, middle and high school will explain how the co\u001b$B!>\u001b(B
\nteaching model is being implemented in Hanover and how it can help all
\nstudents achieve success in the classroom.<\/p>\n
What is co-teaching and what are the benefits for students?<\/p>\n
Co-teaching, or having two teachers in the classroom, has become a popular
\nteaching structure in recent years and has begun to be implemented quite
\nextensively in Hanover. Typically in the co-teaching classroom, there is a
\ngeneral education teacher and a special education teacher who share the
\nteaching responsibilities, with the special education teacher providing
\ndifferentiated instruction for students with special needs. In other words,
\nthe special education teacher may be described as a strategist, taking the
\nstandard lesson and teaching it in a different way so that all students can
\naccess the learning requirements. For many students, this set up may be
\npreferred to having an aide as the special education teacher is able to help
\nall students and no child feels singled out. It is also quite different
\nfrom the \u001b$B!H\u001b(Bresource room\u001b$B!I\u001b(B model. Co-teaching provides an inclusive setting
\nfor special education students while insuring that they are in the least
\nrestrictive environment. The set up and goals of this teaching system
\nvaries according to the age of the children being served.<\/p>\n

What is the Hanover Parent Advisory Council?<\/p>\n
The PAC is a parent group whose mission is to work toward understanding,
\nrespect, support and appropriate education for all children with learning
\ndifferences in our community. The Hanover PAC will provide an opportunity
\nfor parents to network and share information as well as a way to work
\nconstructively with our schools to make them the best they can be for all
\nchildren.<\/p>\n
