As always, \u201cAround Town on the Web\u201d is available to candidates who
\nare running in a contested election here in Hanover. Below please find
\na submission from School Committee candidate John Geary. Mr. Geary is
\nrunning for one of two spots on the School Committee in a four-way
\nrace. Please know that this information has been submitted by the
\ncandidate, and is not necessarily the opinion of \u201cATOTW\u201d. Election
\nDay is this Saturday, May 7th. The polls at Hanover High School are
\nopen from 8:00 a.m. \u2013 6:00 p.m.

I am a graduate of the Haub School of Business at St. Joseph\u2019s
\nUniversity in Philadelphia, PA. While at St. Joseph\u2019s, I was a
\nmember of the Men\u2019s varsity crew team. After graduation, I worked in
\nthe hotel industry, and then began my career at KeyImpact Sales &
\nSystems, Inc. in 1999. KeyImpact is a national food brokerage agency
\nservicing foodservice distributors and operators throughout the
\ncountry. In 2007, my wife and I relocated to Hanover, MA from
\nPhiladelphia, PA to continue my work with KeyImpact as the Director of
\nSales and Marketing for our TradeBridge Division. Soon after we moved
\nto Hanover, my wife and I started a family, and we are now blessed
\nwith 3 fantastic children that will soon start their education in the
\nHanover School District.<\/p>\n
Over the past 4 years residing in Hanover, I have volunteered as an
\nassistant coach for Hanover Girls Lacrosse, and most recently assisted
\nwith the HYAA Wrestling Program. In addition to youth sports, I am
\ncurrently a member of the 2010\/2011 Hanover High School, School
\nCouncil, as a \u201cCommunity Member.\u201d <\/p>\n
My experience volunteering on the HHS school council, has allowed me
\nthe opportunity to get more involved in the school community and has
\nhelped me be more aware of the challenges and opportunities that our
\nschool district faces every year. I feel that my business acumen and
\nanalytical skills will provide me with the skill set necessary to
\nprovide valuable insight and ideas to benefit the entire School
\nCommittee. I believe that a healthy school district is one that
\naggressively explores any and all opportunities for success to prepare
\nour elementary and middle school students for the high school
\nexperience, and to create a \u201c21st Century\u201d learning environment
\nthat allows our high school students to be fully equipped to succeed
\npost graduation.<\/p>\n
My wife and I have 3 young children, and we wish for them to have the
\nbest possible educational and social experience while attending the
\nHanover Schools. I am confident that if I am elected to this position,
\nI will have the best interest of all of Hanover\u2019s students in mind
\nwhen I am asked to make decisions or provide insight on the future
\nactivity of the School Committee.<\/p>\n
Below are a few questions that have been presented to me and my
\nresponses, since my decision to run for this position:<\/p>\n
\/Q) What are your feelings on the job the present School Committee is
\ndoing and what do you feel you would bring to the table? \/A) During my
\ntime this year as a community volunteer for the Hanover High School,
\nSchool Council, I am aware that the Hanover school budget is a top
\npriority for the present School Committee. Tackling this budget is no
\nsmall task, and anyone fully committed to working on this budget
\nshould be commended. I feel that if I am elected, I can implement my
\nbusiness acumen and analytical skills to work toward identifying
\npotential ideas that would generate additional revenue for the school
\ndistrict in the years to come.
\n\/Q) What do you feel are some of the major issues facing school
\ndistricts today? \/\/A\/) I feel that a major concern for the school
\ndistricts is properly preparing our students for their next step after
\ngraduation. The Hanover school committee should be engaged in the
\nconstant changing requirements for success in business, trade,
\ncollege, and all aspects of post graduation opportunities, so that we
\ncan better prepare our students for the challenges yet to come.
\n\/Q) What do you feel are some of the major issues facing students
\ntoday? \/A) During my experience as a community volunteer for the HHS
\nschool council, I was fortunate enough to work side by side with some
\nHHS students implementing the next HHS mission statement, and our
\nstudents eagerly want to be educated in a safe and productive \u201c21st
\nCentury\u201d learning environment, where they can be challenged to
\nexceed their own educational, social, and global expectations. I
\nbelieve that this is a question that should be asked internally on a
\nregular basis, to ensure that every decision the School Committee
\naddresses, has the students\u2019 needs in the highest regard.
\n\/Q) Do you have any comments on the new high school and\/or the recent
\nvandalism of the school but local students\/? A) I think the recent
\nvandalism is a learning experience for our community. We could not
\nforesee this happening; however our community should collectively
\nconsider developing a plan so that a scenario like this is preventable
\nin the future.
\n\/Q) What are the major issues confronting the town which involve your
\noffice? Please express your opinion on these issues and how you
\npropose to deal with them?\/A) I am aware that the town of Hanover and
\nour school district are facing many challenges as it pertains to our
\nfiscal budget. Financial hurdles and budget restrictions are something
\nthat we have to face collectively as a community. I have had to face
\nsimilar scenarios in the business world over the past several years
\ndue to a poor US economy. I hold professional communication to the
\nhighest regard, and if elected, I fully intend on open communication
\nwith my peers on the committee as well as the Hanover community to
\ncollaborate with ideas to aggressively identify any and all potential
\nsolutions. I also believe that the members of the School Committee
\nshould actively seek out potential sources of revenue within the
\ncurrent structure of the School District to help offset budget
\nrestraints.
\n\/Q) Why are you running for this office?\/A) I believe that the best
\nway for an individual to contribute to his or her community, business,
\nor family, is to actively participate. I am certain that I can
\ncontribute my skills, experiences, and passion now, with the goals of
\nlong term success of the school district in the future. Like any
\nprofessional organization, one way in which success is measured is by
\nsustainability. I will be committed to the Hanover community and
\nHanover school district for many years to come. <\/p>\n
