I have 3 children; my oldest is in 1st grade at Center
Elementary School. I have a vested interest in ensuring that our
schools are wonderful places to learn. In addition to being dedicated
to improving the Hanover education system, I also have significant
school committee experience. For 12 years I worked as an attorney
practicing employment, labor and school law. I represented many
cities, towns and school committees throughout the Commonwealth. I
advised on relevant issues such as special education / 504 issues,
union issues (including discipline and grievance hearings), and
student discipline. I have drafted school handbooks and other policies
and procedures. I have conducted teacher negotiations and negotiated
contracts with other union staff. I also have a solid understanding of
municipal finance law, public records and conflict of interest law. I
have conducted trainings on leadership in administration, harassment
and discrimination issues.

Most importantly, I care about the issues that are important to our
community. I am a member at St. Andrew’s Church, where I taught Sunday
school. I volunteer making gift baskets for babies Baptized in the
church and am currently co-chairing the St. Andrew’s Spring Fling. Two
years ago I started Candy for a Cause after a discussion with my
neighbor, Janine Hardman. With the help of the Hanover community, the
staff at the John Curtis Library and Peter Nixon (of AT&T Mobility),
we have shipped over 600 pounds of candy to local troops serving
overseas. Since deciding to run for School Committee, I have devoted
my nights and weekends to meeting with as many parents as possible to
discuss the state of Hanover’s schools. Parents know what needs to
be done to improve the schools and they need to have a voice. I have
heard praise for the schools and teachers, but there are also many
issues that need our attention, including bullying, appropriate and
successful IEP plans, budget cuts and the health and nutrition of our
students. I devoted many years to advocating for other school
committees, and now I want to put that experience to work for the
people of Hanover!

For “Around Town on the Web”,
Cathy H-B

—
“Around Town on the Web” is a community service that has been provided to
self-selected residents of the Town of Hanover since the spring of 2004.
For submission guidelines and answers to frequently asked questions about
“ATOTW”, please go to http://www.atotw.com.
To search for archived “ATOTW” news, view the archive.
If someone forwarded this message to you and you would like to receive
these communications directly, or if you would like to add a new e-mail
address to our system, click here.
If you would like to be removed from this distribution list, click here.

—
Powered by PHPlist, www.phplist.com —

Dear fellow Hanoverians: As always, “Around Town on the Web” is available to candidates who are running in a contested election here in Hanover.
