Dear fellow Hanoverians:
\nI thought I would take advantage of the lull in summer postings to
\nsend along the following e-mail blast. Regular readers will appreciate
\nthis \u201cfollow-up\u201d news from \u201cAround Town on the Web\u201d because
\ntogether, we make this town great!
\nFirst, a couple of weeks ago, I sent an e-mail regarding a potentially
\nsuspect phone fundraising group called \u201cBay State Veterans\u201d and
\nasked you to reply with your feedback or further information about the
\ngroup. I can tell you that eleven of you responded almost immediately
\nwith your concerns about the pitch you had received from \u201cBay State
\nVeterans\u201d. A couple of you noted the caller ID phone number as
\n781-656-0232. One of you was kind enough to mention the \u201cDo Not
\nCall\u201d registry which can be found here: https:\/\/www.donotcall.gov\/
\n , even though the \u201cBay State Veterans\u201d did not appear to be
\nconcerned with following any rules! One of you had received a call
\nfrom the legitimate organization called Bay State *\/Vietnam\/*
\nVeterans, but the rest of you had some of the same concerns that I
\nraised in my e-mail. To summarize, suffice it to say that you should
\nalways be suspect of unsolicited phone calls asking for monetary
\ndonations (especially when they mimic legitimate organizations), and
\ndo not hesitate to ask for a follow-up solicitation in writing in the
\nmail, or check on a group via the Attorney General\u2019s listing of
\nlegitimate charities\u2019 annual filing documents at
\nhttp:\/\/www.charities.ago.state.ma.us\/
\n . Thanks to those of you who chimed in with your additional concerns!
\nSecond, one of my favorite Boy Scouts had a great turnout at his blood
\ndrive yesterday and I could not resist passing along this quote from
\nsoon-to-be-Eagle Scout Mike Krall:
\n\u201cI want to say thank you to everyone that came out yesterday and
\nmade this blood drive so successful. We had 92 people show up and this
\nwill help 231 patients. How cool is that? Thank you to everyone who
\ndonated, took time out of their day, helped by getting the word out,
\nprovided refreshments, and helped out yesterday it all helped to make
\nit a great day. A special thank you to the first time donors who
\novercame their fears and donated blood. This was Mass General’s most
\nsuccessful drive this summer.\u201d
\nAs always, together we make this town great. <\/p>\n
