The following is a notice from the Hanover Board of Health:<\/p>\n
Hurricane Irene, a Category 3 storm (winds over 111 mph) as it slammed
\ninto the Bahamas overnight Wednesday, is expected to impact
\nMassachusetts as early as this weekend. It is projected to potentially
\npass through Massachusetts Sunday night into Monday morning as a
\ncategory 1 or 2 storm. Townspeople should be preparing for potential
\npower outages. Please refer to the tips listed at the end of this
\ne-mail for dealing with possible power outages.<\/p>\n
The Hanover Emergency Response Team, which includes the Fire, Police,
\nHealth, and Building Departments and the Department of Public Works,
\nhas begun planning for any possibility including the need to open
\nemergency shelters at the new Hanover High School. Should sheltering
\nbe necessary, volunteers will be needed to help staff the shelter and
\nprovide support services within the shelter. Medical personnel
\n(including physicians, NP’s and nurses will be needed to assist with
\ntriage and first aid if there is wide-spread wind damage and fallen
\ntrees. If you are willing to volunteer your time to assist those less
\nfortunate, please contact the Hanover Board of Health at
\nhealth@hanover-ma.gov

How to prepare for a power outage:
\n\u00b7 Check flashlights and portable radios; keep extra batteries on hand
\n\u00b7 Fill spare containers with water; plan on stocking 1 gallon of
\nwater per person per day
\n\u00b7 Set your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings. Do not
\nopen doors unnecessarily. Food can stay cold in a full refrigerator
\nfor up to 24 hours and 48 hours in a well-packed freezer.
\n\u00b7 Check with your pharmacist if you have medication that needs
\nrefrigeration.
\n\u00b7 Don’t forget your pets.
\n\u00b7 Please consider checking on your elderly neighbors.<\/p>\n
