Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) Virus Confirmed in Mosquitoes from
\nHanover

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) announced today
\nthat EEE virus has been detected in mosquitoes collected from Hanover,
\nMassachusetts. Hanover has had one EEE virus positive mosquito sample
\ntaken on October 20, 2011 and identified on October 24, 2011. <\/p>\n
*While the Hanover Board of Health continues to work closely with the
\nMDPH, the Board of Health on October 24, 2011 has closed all
\nrecreational fields & school property for outdoor activities from six
\n(6) pm to seven (7) am. This will remain in effect until such time
\nthat Hanover experiences a \u201ckilling frost\u201d (temperatures at or
\nbelow 32 degrees).*
\nEEE is a rare but serious illness spread by the bite of an infected
\nmosquito. While EEE can infect people of all ages, people under 15
\nyears of age or over 50 years of age are at greatest risk for serious
\nillness. <\/p>\n
*By taking a few, common-sense precautions, people can help to protect
\nthemselves and their loved ones*:<\/p>\n
* Avoid Mosquito Bites*
\n\u00b7 *Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours* – The hours from dusk to dawn are
\npeak biting times for many mosquitoes. Consider rescheduling outdoor
\nactivities that occur during evening or early morning. Otherwise, take
\nextra care to use repellent and protective clothing.
\n\u00b7 *Clothing Can Help* reduce mosquito bites. Although it may be
\ndifficult to do when it\u2019s hot, wearing long-sleeves, long pants and
\nsocks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.
\n\u00b7 *Apply Insect Repellent* when you go outdoors. Use a repellent with
\n*DEET* (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), *permethrin, picaridin* (KBR 3023),
\n*IR3535* or *oil of lemon eucalyptus* [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)]
\naccording to the instructions on the product label. DEET products
\nshould not be used on infants under two months of age and should be
\nused in concentrations of 30% or less on older children. Oil of lemon
\neucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age.
\nPermethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing,
\nshoes, bed nets and camping gear and should not be applied to skin. <\/p>\n
