It is well established that children with learning disabilities and\/or
\nattention deficit disorders are at risk for developing symptoms of
\npsychological distress. In particular the academic and social
\nstruggles related to these difficulties can result in depression and
\nanxiety. It is critical that when we evaluate and work to understand
\nthe challenges children endure in school that we also assess the
\nimpact their academic struggles are having on their social and
\nemotional functioning. Further, it is clear that children are commonly
\nmisdiagnosed with learning disabilities or attention deficit
\ndisorders. Problems with attention or with learning can be the direct
\nresult of a primary anxiety disorder or a primary mood disorder. What
\nmay look like A.D.H.D. may more accurately be a child who is
\ndistracted by worries, low self-esteem, or frustration. This dynamic
\ncan result in a \u201cWhich came first, the chicken or the egg?\u201d type
\nof diagnostic dilemma. This workshop will work to examine these
\npatterns and discuss implications for assessment and intervention. <\/p>\n

*What is the Hanover Parent Advisory Council?*
\nThe *PAC* is a parent group whose mission is to work toward
\nunderstanding, respect, support and appropriate education for all
\nchildren with learning differences in our community. The *Hanover PAC*
\nwill provide an opportunity for parents to network and share
\ninformation as well as a way to work constructively with our schools
\nto make them the best they can be for all children.
