Dear fellow Hanoverians:
\nAs a follow up to their fall safety tips e-mail, the Hanover Woman\u2019s
\nClub Juniors sent along the following public service announcement for
\nHanover residents:
\nGet prepared for winter storm emergencies!
\n\u00b7 Buy non-perishable food such as peanut butter and jelly, crackers,
\ndry cereal, chips, breakfast bars, pudding cups, water, juices, etc.
\nPut these items away just in case you cannot get to the store for a
\nday or two. Food for the animals in your house is also important to
\nthem.
\n\u00b7 Make sure you have enough batteries for radios, flashlight, clocks
\nand games. You should have a flashlight for each member of the family.
\nStock up on candles with secure holders and matches.
\n\u00b7 Have hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, snow pants and boots
\navailable.
\n\u00b7 Have games appropriate for children. Cards, board games, hide and
\nseek in the house, reading books, storytelling, singing, paper and
\npencils, crayons, paint, etc. This helps to pass the time since the TV
\nand electronic games and cell phones will not work until electricity
\nis restored.
\n\u00b7 If you find yourself without electricity for a few days, being in
\nthe dark is scary for young children. If you have sleeping bags, put
\nthem all in one room and pretend you are camping! The young ones will
\nadjust better to knowing you are nearby.
\n\u00b7 Make sure you have enough gas in your car or truck. Check the oil,
\nwater, and antifreeze and windshield washer fluid. A folding shovel is
\na must if you must dig your car out of a snow bank.
\n\u00b7 Keep extra sets of hats, coats, socks, mittens, sweaters,
\nsweatpants, blankets, water and crackers in the trunk of your car or
\ntruck just in case you\u2019re stuck in your vehicle due to break downs
\non the highway for an extended period of time.
\n\u00b7 Make sure your snow blower has enough fuel and is in working
\ncondition.
\n\u00b7 How about the old shovel? Is it still good, or does it need to be
\nreplaced?
\n\u00b7 Stock up on kitty litter or sand for the stairs and walkway.
\n\u00b7 Shovel your mail box out.
\n\u00b7 If you have a fire hydrant nearby, make sure it is shoveled out.
\n\u00b7 If you go sledding with the family, make sure everyone wears a
\nhelmet.
\n\u00b7 Enjoy the storm, it will only last a short time.
