This letter will be read aloud at the August 22
School Committee meeting, and all members of the committee are already
aware of its contents.
As I said in an e-mail earlier today to Dr. Nash, “I was saddened to
hear of your imminent retirement from the Hanover Public Schools. You
have served our town’s children, and particularly my children,
extraordinarily well. I for one am grateful for your hard work, strong
commitment to high academic standards, steadfast professionalism, and
also for our excellent working relationship. I am so proud of the work
we have done together, and hope you are too.”
Many of my readers know that I backed my way into “Around Town on
the Web” in 2004 as the town re-started its efforts to build a new
high school. Kris Nash has been at the forefront of those efforts
since the day she set foot in Hanover, and I for one salute her and
wish her well in this new chapter of her life.
Thank you, Kris, for the honor of re-printing this letter for all to
read. I originally thought that I would pull pieces from this letter
for “Around Town on the Web”, but now think that it needs to stand
complete for all in town to read and appreciate.
Godspeed, Kris, and thank you sincerely for your service to the Town
of Hanover.

“Dear School Committee Members,
Since August 2006, I have served proudly as superintendent of the
Hanover Public Schools. When I accepted this position, I noted in my
remarks that above all else there needs to be a “good fit” between
the candidate and the school district. I am pleased to say, we have
had that “good fit.”
During the past six years, I have been passionate about my belief that
Hanover was the school district where I wanted to serve and to lead.
During this time, I have remained true to the two principles which
have guided me through my forty-four years in education…….equity
and excellence for all students. I continue to be in awe by the
outstanding accomplishments of our students when we as adults commit
to these principles and the belief that “all means all.” All
students given the support can achieve at high levels. We can all be
justifiably proud of these accomplishments.
I informed the School Committee members in 2009, when they negotiated
my current five year contract, that I would remain in the position of
superintendent for at least three years or as long as it took to open
the new high school. I am pleased to say, because of the collaborative
efforts of many that happened last September. It was an outstanding
accomplishment for all of us.
This summer, as a result of major surgery, I have had a good deal of
time to reflect, in general, on my long, rewarding, career in
education, and in particular, on my own personal needs at this time in
my life. It became clear to me that I was at another crossroads in my
life. After forty- four years of continuous service in public
education, I am ready for a change. I look forward to being home at a
reasonable hour to enjoy the company of my husband, to have time for
myself to continue to explore new interests, and, in general, to have
time to “stop and smell the roses” at this time in my life. Thus,
I have made the decision to retire as superintendent of Hanover Public
Schools. My official retirement date will be January 9, 2013. However,
with vacation time that has accrued, my final day of work will be
November 2, 2012.
I have given thoughtful consideration to selecting the best time to
retire that will have minimal impact on the district. By staying on
until early November, I will be able to ensure a successful and smooth
opening of a new school year, get other initiatives and projects off
to a good start, and begin the budget process.
It has been an honor and humbling experience to be the superintendent
of Hanover Public Schools. We have great students, committed
administrators, talented and hard-working staff, caring parents,
dedicated school committee members, and a community that wants the
best for their children. We are so fortunate.
I wish to thank all of those individuals with whom I have worked over
the last six years. I will assist the School Committee in any way
possible to ensure a smooth and seamless transition. Thank you for the
opportunity to serve as the superintendent of Hanover Public Schools.
Very truly yours,
Kristine E.
