The following is a message from the Hanover Emergency Management
\nAgency. <\/p>\n
Emergency Management has been in constant contact with Town Manager,
\nTroy Clarkson, Department Heads and other Town Officials. We continue
\nto monitor the storm together and have been busy making preparations
\nfor a significant impact to our community.<\/p>\n
Based upon current information on Hurricane Sandy, we urge residents
\nto prepare for a high wind event. Sustained winds in excess of 40 mph
\nare likely with higher gusts. We are expecting to see widespread power
\noutages in our area. <\/p>\n
National Grid has worked together with Fire Chiefs and Emergency
\nManagement Directors to implement a response plan for downed power
\nlines. They have requested crews from California, Washington State and
\nCanada to move into our area and assist them. <\/p>\n
During the storm National Grid\u2019s emphasis will be to keep roadways
\nopen and clear of downed power lines for public safety responders.
\nRestoration of power may not begin for 72 hours and may take days to
\ncomplete. If you lose your power you should be prepared to be without
\nit for five or more days. Hopefully power can be restored sooner.<\/p>\n

\nThe Town of Hanover will utilize the following means to keep residents
\ninformed:<\/p>\n
\u00b7 The web, Hanover\u2019s web address is www.hanover-ma.gov
\n\u00b7 Facebook, Hanover\u2019s facebook account is @HanoverMA
\n\u00b7 Twitter, Hanover\u2019s twitter account is HanoverEMA
\n\u00b7 Local Access Cable. Take the time now to find the Hanover Channels
\non your cable tv.
\n\u00b7 Reverse 911. We will utilize the Plymouth County Sheriff\u2019s
\nDepartment Code Red alert system to send phone messages. You sign your
\ncell phone up for these messages also by visiting
\nhttp:\/\/www.pcsdma.org <\/p>\n
\u00b7 FM Radio, WATD 95.9FM<\/p>\n
Shelter In Place during the storm
\nResidents are advised to shelter in place. At this time there are no
\nplans to open an emergency shelter.
\n\u00b7 Listen to a battery-operated radio or television for hurricane
\nprogress reports.
\n\u00b7 Stay inside, away from windows, skylights, and glass doors.
\n\u00b7 Keep a supply of flashlights and extra batteries handy.
\n\u00b7 We will closely monitor the situation and open a shelter should it
\nbe required<\/p>\n
Downed Power Lines:
\n Residents are advised to use extreme care around downed utility
\nwires.
\n\u00b7 *Report downed power lines by calling 9-1-1.*
\n\u00b7 All downed wires should be considered live. This includes electric,
\ntelephone and cable wires.
\n\u00b7 Emergency responders will be marking downed wires with YELLOW
\ncaution tape. Remind children to stay away from all downed wires.
\n\u00b7 Again, all downed wires should be considered live and avoided.<\/p>\n
*Power Outages:*
\n\u00b7 *Phone power outages to National Grid directly at 1-800-322-3223.*
\nThis is the best way to make sure that they know you are without
\npower.
\n\u00b7 \/Do not call 9-1-1 to report a power outage.\/<\/p>\n
Generators:
\n\u00b7 Use Caution when operating generators.
\n\u00b7 Follow manufacturers instructions
\n\u00b7 Do not run generators near structures or in enclosed areas due to
\nthe potential for carbon monoxide poisoning<\/p>\n
Lighting:
\nBattery powered lanterns and flashlights are the safest emergency
\nlighting source.
\n\u00b7 Use extreme caution when using candles. <\/p>\n
Chain Saws
\n\u00b7 Residents who own chainsaws should follow manufacturers recommended
\noperating guidelines.
\n\u00b7 Do not attempt to cut down trees that are “hung up” on houses or on
\nother trees. How they fall is very unpredictable and may result in
\ndeath, injury or further damage.
\n\u00b7 Leave difficult chainsaw work to properly trained tree removal
\nprofessionals<\/p>\n
Make sure your cell phone is charged before the storm and consider
\nbuying a charger you can plug into your car so you are able to
\nre-charge it. Make sure your car\u2019s fuel tank is topped off.
