{"id":1710,"date":"2012-10-28T21:30:11","date_gmt":"2012-10-29T01:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/atotw.com\/archive\/?p=1710"},"modified":"2012-10-28T21:30:11","modified_gmt":"2012-10-29T01:30:11","slug":"hurricane-sandy-message-from-hema","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atotw.com\/archive\/?p=1710","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Sandy message from HEMA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>* *<br \/>\nDear fellow Hanoverians:<br \/>\n* *<br \/>\n* *<br \/>\n*Sunday, October 28, 2012 &#8211; 15:00 hours*<br \/>\n* *<\/p>\n<p>The following is a message from the Hanover Emergency Management<br \/>\nAgency. <\/p>\n<p>Emergency Management has been in constant contact with Town Manager,<br \/>\nTroy Clarkson, Department Heads and other Town Officials. We continue<br \/>\nto monitor the storm together and have been busy making preparations<br \/>\nfor a significant impact to our community.<\/p>\n<p>Based upon current information on Hurricane Sandy, we urge residents<br \/>\nto prepare for a high wind event. Sustained winds in excess of 40 mph<br \/>\nare likely with higher gusts. We are expecting to see widespread power<br \/>\noutages in our area. <\/p>\n<p>National Grid has worked together with Fire Chiefs and Emergency<br \/>\nManagement Directors to implement a response plan for downed power<br \/>\nlines. They have requested crews from California, Washington State and<br \/>\nCanada to move into our area and assist them. <\/p>\n<p>During the storm National Grid\u2019s emphasis will be to keep roadways<br \/>\nopen and clear of downed power lines for public safety responders.<br \/>\nRestoration of power may not begin for 72 hours and may take days to<br \/>\ncomplete. If you lose your power you should be prepared to be without<br \/>\nit for five or more days. Hopefully power can be restored sooner.<\/p>\n<p>*Official Information:*<br \/>\nThe Town of Hanover will utilize the following means to keep residents<br \/>\ninformed:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 The web, Hanover\u2019s web address is www.hanover-ma.gov<br \/>\n\u00b7 Facebook, Hanover\u2019s facebook account is @HanoverMA<br \/>\n\u00b7 Twitter, Hanover\u2019s twitter account is HanoverEMA<br \/>\n\u00b7 Local Access Cable. Take the time now to find the Hanover Channels<br \/>\non your cable tv.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Reverse 911. We will utilize the Plymouth County Sheriff\u2019s<br \/>\nDepartment Code Red alert system to send phone messages. You sign your<br \/>\ncell phone up for these messages also by visiting<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.pcsdma.org <\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 FM Radio, WATD 95.9FM<\/p>\n<p>Shelter In Place during the storm<br \/>\nResidents are advised to shelter in place. At this time there are no<br \/>\nplans to open an emergency shelter.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Listen to a battery-operated radio or television for hurricane<br \/>\nprogress reports.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Stay inside, away from windows, skylights, and glass doors.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Keep a supply of flashlights and extra batteries handy.<br \/>\n\u00b7 We will closely monitor the situation and open a shelter should it<br \/>\nbe required<\/p>\n<p>Downed Power Lines:<br \/>\n Residents are advised to use extreme care around downed utility<br \/>\nwires.<br \/>\n\u00b7 *Report downed power lines by calling 9-1-1.*<br \/>\n\u00b7 All downed wires should be considered live. This includes electric,<br \/>\ntelephone and cable wires.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Emergency responders will be marking downed wires with YELLOW<br \/>\ncaution tape. Remind children to stay away from all downed wires.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Again, all downed wires should be considered live and avoided.<\/p>\n<p>*Power Outages:*<br \/>\n\u00b7 *Phone power outages to National Grid directly at 1-800-322-3223.*<br \/>\nThis is the best way to make sure that they know you are without<br \/>\npower.<br \/>\n\u00b7 \/Do not call 9-1-1 to report a power outage.\/<\/p>\n<p>Generators:<br \/>\n\u00b7 Use Caution when operating generators.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Follow manufacturers instructions<br \/>\n\u00b7 Do not run generators near structures or in enclosed areas due to<br \/>\nthe potential for carbon monoxide poisoning<\/p>\n<p>Lighting:<br \/>\nBattery powered lanterns and flashlights are the safest emergency<br \/>\nlighting source.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Use extreme caution when using candles. <\/p>\n<p>Chain Saws<br \/>\n\u00b7 Residents who own chainsaws should follow manufacturers recommended<br \/>\noperating guidelines.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Do not attempt to cut down trees that are &#8220;hung up&#8221; on houses or on<br \/>\nother trees. How they fall is very unpredictable and may result in<br \/>\ndeath, injury or further damage.<br \/>\n\u00b7 Leave difficult chainsaw work to properly trained tree removal<br \/>\nprofessionals<\/p>\n<p>Make sure your cell phone is charged before the storm and consider<br \/>\nbuying a charger you can plug into your car so you are able to<br \/>\nre-charge it.
