*April 27, 2013 Drug Take Back Day*<\/p>\n
Thanks to the Board of Health, once again residents of Hanover and
\nsurrounding towns have the opportunity to safely dispose of unused
\nprescription and over the counter medications. The U.S. Drug
\nEnforcement Agency (DEA), in cooperation with the Hanover Board of
\nHealth and the Hanover Police Department, will be participating in the
\nnationwide drug take back day and will be providing receptacles at the
\nHanover Senior Center at 665 Center Street, Hanover between 10:00 a.m.
\nand 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27th.<\/p>\n
Residents are strongly encouraged to identify expired, discontinued or
\nunwanted medications prior to April 27. Bringing these medications for
\ndisposal can help prevent septic problems, illegal diversion, or
\naccidental ingestion:<\/p>\n
1. Improperly discarded medications can end up in unintended hands.
\n2. Flushed medications end up in ground water supply via septic
\nsystems.
\n3. Medications thrown in the transfer station pit can leak into land
\nfills.
\n4. Unused medications kept in cabinets may be accidentally ingested.
\n5. Expired medications can cause adverse reactions or toxic chemical
\nformation.<\/p>\n
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other environmental
\ngroups warn against contamination of our water supplies and septic
\nsystems. Antibiotics may reduce beneficial flora and promote unhealthy
\norganisms. Medications that are ordinarily changed by the body to
\nharmless states may have serious impact when discarded unchanged. It
\nis safest to seek routes of disposal that protect our resources.
\nKeeping unused drugs out of circulation also an excellent way to
\nprotect the environment by following these suggestions:<\/p>\n
1. Buy over the counter drugs and supplements in sensible quantities.
\n2. Buy new products in a smaller size before buying larger stock if
\ntolerated.
\n3. Ask your provider to provide samples or 30 day prescriptions before
\nfilling a 90 day prescription.
\n4. If you have a reaction to a medication, notify your provider
\nimmediately in time to stop unwanted refills.
\n5. Take all antibiotics completely as directed.
\n6. Keep controlled substance stock minimal to avoid drug diversion.
\n7. Keep medications safely stored according to pharmacy directions and
\nonly carry enough medication on your person for immediate needs.<\/p>\n
With everyone\u2019s help, drug diversion and environmental contamination
\ncan be reduced if not eliminated. Thank you for participating in safe
