Dear fellow Hanoverians:
\nI have just returned home from my first ever \u201cMassachusetts Town
\nClerk\u2019s Association\u201d conference and thought you might appreciate a
\nbrief report! If not, just hit \u201cdelete\u201d!
\nThe Annual Summer Conference is held in Falmouth over two nights and
\nthree days. Wednesday\u2019s General Session was titled \u201cNational
\nElection Trends and Massachusetts Elections\u201d. A professor from MIT
\nand the Massachusetts Director of Elections discussed issues such as
\nvoter ID, in-person early voting, no-excuse absentee voting and lots
\nmore. With 18 days as I write this until my first election as your
\nTown Clerk, that session could not have been timelier.
\nFor my Thursday morning breakout session, I chose to continue my
\neducation about elections by attending a session called \u201cHearings
\nbefore the Board of Registrars and General Election Potpourri\u201d. My
\nThursday afternoon breakout session was aptly titled \u201cWhere do I
\nBegin: Resources and Tools for New and Inquiring Clerks\u201d, and
\nFriday\u2019s General Session included updates from state agency
\nofficials regarding local mandates, municipal laws, ethics, campaign
\nand political finance, and vital records.
\nMeals and evenings afforded me the opportunity to meet my neighboring
\ncolleagues from Norwell, Rockland, Cohasset, Whitman, Duxbury and the
\nlike, and also far-flung colleagues from places like Barre, Sudbury,
\nFalmouth and Lexington. I am grateful to all of you, the taxpayers of
\nHanover, for supporting my endeavors and my education about my role as
\nyour Town Clerk. It was time, energy and money very well spent and I
\nam particularly grateful to Town Manager Troy Clarkson and Municipal
\nFinance Director Janine Smith for their encouragement and budgetary
\njuggling so soon after my election. Extra special thanks and a shout
\nout to Assistant Town Clerk JoAnne O\u2019Connor and Registrars Nancy
\nGoldthwait, Pam Ferguson and Kathy DiSabito for \u201cholding down the
\nfort\u201d in Town Hall in my absence, too!<\/p>\n
