Dear fellow Hanoverians:
\nHanover Town Clerk Cathy Harder-Bernier today announced that the Town
\nof Hanover has received $17,470 in state funding to reimburse the town
\nfor election expenses incurred during the April 2013 State Primary and
\nthe June 2013 State Election to fill the vacancy in the U. S. Senate
\ncaused by John Kerry\u2019s resignation.
\n\u201cI am grateful to the Legislature, the Secretary of the Commonwealth
\nWilliam Galvin\u2019s office, the Division of Local Mandates, and Auditor
\nSuzanne Bump\u2019s office for following through on reimbursing the town
\nfor these unanticipated expenses. I am also thankful for the
\nassistance of Victor Diniak of the Department of Public Works who was
\nhelpful to me as I prepared the cost certifications for the Town.\u201d
\nHarder-Bernier reported these anticipated revenues in September to
\nFinance Director Janine Smith and the Selectmen subsequently followed
\nher recommendation to record the proceeds as a general fund receipt
\nfor FY13 and close it to free cash.
\nAdditionally, Harder-Bernier stated that the town will receive $3,654
\nto cover already anticipated expenses for the September 2014 State
\nPrimary and the November 2014 State Election. \u201cThis funding has been
\nprovided by the Legislature since it enacted Chapter 503 of the Acts
\nof 1983 to defray the costs of the legislation that established
\nstatewide polling hours for state elections, also known as the Uniform
\nPolling Hours Act. It is provided in advance of the elections and
\nallows us to stay open a full thirteen hours on those two days. While
\nit is only a portion of the expenses incurred by the Town, it is
\nnevertheless an appreciated source of revenue\u201d, Harder-Bernier said.
