For those who have not
heard the news, Matt was seriously injured in an unfortunate accident
while zip-lining the day after Christmas. He underwent brain surgery
at Boston Children’s Hospital to help relieve the swelling, and has
been in a medically-induced coma ever since. I initially hesitated to
release the news out of concern for the family’s privacy, but now
that the local papers and news reports have picked up the story, I
thought I would add some words from “Around Town on the Web”.
Matthew and his family moved to Maine last summer, but the Hanover
community has obviously been deeply affected by the news of Matt’s
accident. He’s an active boy; I’ve seen pond hockey pictures,
baseball team photos, and one of him in a Hanover football uniform,
too. He lived up off of Cushing Hill, and attended the TePee program
as a kindergartener. He was remembered by a former teacher as “the
exceptionally big and tall boy with the quiet and warm demure”. His
family has been described as “wonderful” and “deeply
religious”. Those wishing to support the Cox family can do so by
visiting the Caring Bridge page at
http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/matthewcox

that is being maintained by his aunt. The family is also asking for
prayers and for residents to wear or post baby blue ribbons to express
support for Matthew. It’s caught on quickly – hundreds showed up
at an impromptu prayer service at St. Mary’s last weekend, and blue
ribbons now serve as profile pictures on Facebook accounts of scores
of Hanover residents.
As one friend said to me, “I think everyone (wants) to feel like
they (can do) something”. As another friend said, “Although he
lives in Maine now, he is still one of our Hanover boys”. And that,
dear readers, is why I send this news of 10 year old Matthew Cox.
Let’s do whatever we can do to support one of our own. It’s simply
what we do here in Hanover.

For “Around Town on the Web”,
Cathy H-B

—
“Around Town on the Web” (“ATOTW”) has been a valued push notification
since the spring of 2004 – long before there were push notifications!

For submission guidelines and answers to frequently asked questions about
“ATOTW”, please go to http://www.atotw.com.
To search for archived “ATOTW” news, view the archive.
If you would like to be added to this distribution list, click here.
