Dear fellow Hanoverians:
\nIt has been a week since 10 year old former Hanover resident Matthew
\nCox\u2019s accident, and I continue to receive phone calls, text messages
\nand e-mails from so many of you about him. For those who have not
\nheard the news, Matt was seriously injured in an unfortunate accident
\nwhile zip-lining the day after Christmas. He underwent brain surgery
\nat Boston Children\u2019s Hospital to help relieve the swelling, and has
\nbeen in a medically-induced coma ever since. I initially hesitated to
\nrelease the news out of concern for the family\u2019s privacy, but now
\nthat the local papers and news reports have picked up the story, I
\nthought I would add some words from \u201cAround Town on the Web\u201d.
\nMatthew and his family moved to Maine last summer, but the Hanover
\ncommunity has obviously been deeply affected by the news of Matt\u2019s
\naccident. He\u2019s an active boy; I\u2019ve seen pond hockey pictures,
\nbaseball team photos, and one of him in a Hanover football uniform,
\ntoo. He lived up off of Cushing Hill, and attended the TePee program
\nas a kindergartener. He was remembered by a former teacher as \u201cthe
\nexceptionally big and tall boy with the quiet and warm demure\u201d. His
\nfamily has been described as \u201cwonderful\u201d and \u201cdeeply
\nreligious\u201d. Those wishing to support the Cox family can do so by

that is being maintained by his aunt. The family is also asking for
\nprayers and for residents to wear or post baby blue ribbons to express
\nsupport for Matthew. It\u2019s caught on quickly \u2013 hundreds showed up
\nat an impromptu prayer service at St. Mary\u2019s last weekend, and blue
\nribbons now serve as profile pictures on Facebook accounts of scores
\nof Hanover residents.
\nAs one friend said to me, \u201cI think everyone (wants) to feel like
\nthey (can do) something\u201d. As another friend said, \u201cAlthough he
\nlives in Maine now, he is still one of our Hanover boys\u201d. And that,
\ndear readers, is why I send this news of 10 year old Matthew Cox.
\nLet\u2019s do whatever we can do to support one of our own. It’s simply
\nwhat we do here in Hanover.<\/p>\n
