{"id":2451,"date":"2015-04-27T20:00:28","date_gmt":"2015-04-28T00:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/atotw.com\/archive\/?p=2451"},"modified":"2015-04-27T20:00:28","modified_gmt":"2015-04-28T00:00:28","slug":"state-your-address-and-name-please","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atotw.com\/archive\/?p=2451","title":{"rendered":"State your address and name please!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear fellow Hanoverians:<\/p>\n<p>Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier, after consultation with members of her<br \/>\nelection staff and the State Elections Division, today offered the<br \/>\nfollowing information for voters at the May Town Election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoters who are new to the voting process in Massachusetts, or even<br \/>\nlong-time Hanover residents who vote regularly, may be surprised when<br \/>\nelection workers who are friends or neighbors ask for their street address<br \/>\nand full name prior to giving them a ballot.  Voters are therefore advised<br \/>\nthat it is actually state law that requires poll workers to ask for<br \/>\neveryone\u2019s street address and name, said Harder-Bernier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 54, Section 76, \u201cEach<br \/>\nvoter desiring to vote at a polling place shall give his name and, if<br \/>\nrequested, his residence to one of the officers at the entrance to the<br \/>\nspace within the guard rail, who shall thereupon distinctly announce the<br \/>\nsame. If such name is found on the voting list, the election officer shall<br \/>\ncheck and repeat the name and shall admit the voter to the space enclosed<br \/>\nby the guard rail and\u2026such voter shall be given one ballot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Hanover we try very hard to make our election experience<br \/>\nuser-friendly and welcoming.  Voting is an important cornerstone of our<br \/>\ndemocracy, but let\u2019s be honest, it is also an enjoyable social<br \/>\nexperience.  Please know that any formalities that are imposed upon the<br \/>\nvoter are for good reason, including state laws, which must be followed.<br \/>\nWe try to balance the competing interests and look forward to warmly<br \/>\ngreeting everyone on Election Day,\u201d said Harder-Bernier.  \u201cMy staff<br \/>\nappreciates your understanding in the meantime!\u201d, she added.<\/p>\n<p>The Annual Town Election will be held on Saturday, May 9th, 2015 from 8:00<br \/>\na.m. \u2013 6:00 p.m.  All Hanover voters vote at Hanover High School, located<br \/>\nat 287 Cedar Street.
