It was a
joyous occasion, triumphant even. For those who have lived in Hanover for
a while, you will remember the fits and starts to get to this day – the
Town Meeting debates, the attempt to renovate the farm house, the decision
to build not one but two homes instead, the plea for volunteers to create
the Hanover local partnership committee, and so much more.

What might not be readily apparent, however, are the countless volunteer
hours, the fundraising, the businesses that stepped up, and simply, the
people. Some of the people who were the lifeblood of this project day in
and day out for months and even years include site supervisors Deane Howard
and John Schembari, site managers Amy Boynton, Virginia Casey, Laura
Cromarty, Kathy Fanning, John Galvin, Barry Gifford, Teresa James, Stephen
Marshall and John Najarian, and Local Partnership Committee members Susanne
Battikha, Nancy Barrett, Anne Bloomer, Bob Bloomer, Jeanne
Connolly-Horrigan, Kathy Fanning, Paul Fanning, Kathy MacDougall, Sue
Petersen, Susan Radin, Michael Reid, and Katie Rooney. There were
countless volunteers who swung a hammer or wielded a saw to actually build
the houses. And, because of our support of this project at least two or
three town meetings, we ALL have had a hand in this day in some way or
another.

The Patry and Plahn Families are moving into their houses this afternoon.
I had the chance to talk to Elaine Plahn this morning, and the glee in her
voice and grateful and emotional acceptance of all that she has been given
were palpable. Please join me in welcoming both families to their new
homes, and congratulations to all involved for making the dream of
homeownership possible for two new Hanover families. We have a lot to be
proud of as a town.

For more information about South Shore Habitat for Humanity, please go to
their website at www.sshabitat.org .
