Dear fellow Hanoverians:<\/p>\n
Hanover head coach Judy Schneider’s varsity field hockey team handed Judy
\nher 500th victory earlier this season, and then made it to the South
\nSectional Finals for only the second time in the program’s history last
\nweek.<\/p>\n
The Lady Indians did not stop there.<\/p>\n
Earlier today, the Hanover varsity field hockey team won their first ever
\nSouth Sectional Championship by a score of 1-0 over Cohasset in an amazing
\ndouble overtime “sudden victory” win. Senior wing Maura Kelly put the ball
\nin the net after an amazing pass from senior captain and center forward Sam
\nTaylor with less than a minute left on the clock before penalty strokes.<\/p>\n
The game started slowly for the Indians, with Cohasset dominating the game
\nfor the better part of the first half. Some timely substitutions helped to
\nshift the momentum a little before the half was over, but the game remained
\ntied at 0 at the first horn. Midfielder Chachie Smigliani controlled the
\nfield for Hanover, with great support from defenders Jen Rosinski, Brielle
\nProuty and Jess Gardiner. Both teams only had two shots on net in the
\nfirst half; it was a true defensive effort on both sides of the ball.<\/p>\n
Hanover came out stronger in the second half and had a few more scoring
\nchances, but again, both teams came up short by the time regulation ended.
\nIn the first overtime, which features a modified 7 v. 7 format, Hanover
\nbegan to control the ball more. Our skills and conditioning really started
\nto shine. Coach Schneider called on play-maker and lead scorer Sam Taylor
\nto work some of her patented magic in order to get the ball in the net, but
\nat the end of the first overtime, the score was still tied at 0. Hanover
\ntruly dominated the second 7 v. 7 overtime period, also, but it looked like
\nwe were headed to the penalty stroke round. As the clock ticked down and I
\ngrabbed Judy’s penalty stroke line-up in anticipation of the next phase of
\nthe game, Maura Kelly put the ball in the net for the “sudden victory” win.
\n No need for strokes; Hanover had the win!<\/p>\n
Congratulations to the entire team for a well-deserved victory and for
\nmaking Hanover Field Hockey history. I’ve got news for you, dear readers,
\nthis team does not intend to stop anytime soon. When they heard this
\nafternoon that perennial champion Watertown beat Manchester-Essex by a
\nscore of 4-0 in the North Divisional finals, they were undaunted, and said
\n“bring them on!” What a gift these kids are to Coach Schneider in this
\nexceptional year!<\/p>\n
Hanover plays North Divisional Champion Watertown on Tuesday at Canton High
\nSchool. Game time was unknown as of this writing. Go to
