Hanover’s Lady Indians reached the State Field Hockey
Tournament Semi-Finals for the first time in program history this week
after amassing a record of 19-0-3. The team finally lost to perennial
powerhouse Watertown by a final score of 5-0, but not after giving
Watertown a run for their money in the first half and only being down by
one goal at the half. Watertown continued the nation’s longest winning
streak (yes, you read that right – the NATION’s) as they notched their
159th consecutive win. There was really only so much the Indians could do
last night, and they have so much to be proud of despite the loss.

Additionally, by now you have surely heard that Hanover’s varsity
football team also lost a tough game against Holliston last Friday by a
score of 21-0. The boys made it all the way to the South Sectional Finals,
which was also a terrific deeper-than-in-a-long-time run into the
postseason for Hanover. They finished the season with an 8-2 record
overall, and 5-0 in their league.

Please join me in congratulating both of these teams for an outstanding
season. But while I have you, I want to also point out something about the
two coaches.

You may remember that field hockey Coach Judy Schneider notched her 500th
career win earlier this season. Judy has been the backbone of Hanover’s
high-achieving team for longer than anyone can remember. While this
year’s 19-1-3 final record is truly outstanding, Hanover field hockey has
done nothing but win for decades. You might also know that 3 years ago,
under a different coach, Hanover’s football team had a 2-8 record. New
coach Chris Landolfi has quadrupled the win column in what seems like no
time.

So what is the secret to their coaching successes? Could it have anything
to do with the following comments overheard this past week?

(Varsity Field Hockey player, after losing her final game Tuesday night, to
Judy Schneider) “Coach, wait, does this mean that I don’t get to see
you every day anymore? What am I going to do if I don’t get to talk to
you every day?”

(HHS Administrator, when asked what he thinks about the “still new”
football coach Chris Landolfi) “He’s a different kind of football
coach. He really cares about each and every player individually.”

Folks, there is something special about both of these coaches…they simply
care about their players, and their players care about them. Both teams
went deep into their state tournaments for lots of reasons, but maybe, just
maybe, it also has something to do with the fact that two of Hanover’s
finest coaches simply care about Hanover’s kids.

Sounds good to me. I’m going with it. Congrats to coaches and players
alike on their outstanding seasons. And now that the secret is out,
let’s keep up the culture of caring here in Hanover athletics…it seems
to work on so many levels.

For “Around Town on the Web”,
Cathy H-B

—
“Around Town on the Web” (“ATOTW”) has been a valued push notification
since the spring of 2004 – long before there were push notifications!

For submission guidelines and answers to frequently asked questions
about “ATOTW”, please go to http://www.atotw.com.
To search for archived “ATOTW” news, view the archive

.
If you would like to be added to this distribution list, click here

.
Please follow the link in the response e-mail to validate your
account.
