How come?

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Those of you with kids in school may be wondering why there is no school on
Tuesday. It was no small reason and no small feat to get us there. With
gracious thanks to HHS Principal Matt Paquette, Hanover Schools
Superintendent Matt Ferron, Administrative Assistant Rachael O’Callaghan,
and the entire Hanover School Committee, the safety and security of our
children remained the priority as they scheduled a professional development
day to coincide with the Presidential Primary this coming Tuesday.

At the risk of forgetting someone, additional thanks and praise go to
Athletic Director Scott Hutchison and all of the coaches for juggling their
basketball and wrestling schedules so that the gym may be set up on Monday
afternoon without incurring overtime costs to the town. HHS Office staff
members Kathy Gallagher, Debbie Kinney and Nancy Foster answer my countless
questions and make more quiet arrangements than I’ll ever know. Bob and
Patty Dugas of Joe’s Coffee Shop provide free coffee and muffins for
election workers and Lynne Petrowski and the HHS cafeteria staff share
their resources and food, too. Another shout out to the DPW – this time
to Jerry Peterson and the Facilities Staff – for working with me and all
of the above mentioned folks to set-up our election and break it down with
minimal interruption for the students on Monday and Wednesday. The Highway
staff of the DPW stands ready to set up our traffic patterns and temporary
“election parking only” signs on Tuesday. All of it will be
orchestrated with the able oversight of our Hanover Police Department
details thanks to the supervision of Chief Larry Sweeney.

Election staff members have been hard at work for weeks and months, too.
Wardens Carol and Rick Mattes, John Morris, and Joe DiSabato have scheduled
workers and tested voting machines…twice, thanks to the re-printed
ballots. Senior Clerk Meg Coogan has processed and organized hundreds of
absentee ballots. Debbie Balch, Corina Silva, Sean Meehan and Theresa
Mercurio have pre-counted over 10,000 ballots. Registrars Nancy
Goldthwait, Pam Ferguson and Kathy DiSabato have registered hundreds of new
voters, checked countless registration statuses, and printed voting lists
(with the able assistance of Judy LeClair and Pat Beers, too).

So yes, there is no school next Tuesday. I hope you will take some time
that day to come and vote; it is the greatest power of our democracy. It
takes a lot of co-operation from a lot of people – months and months
before the big day – to run an election. Thanks to all involved.

For “Around Town on the Web”,
Cathy H-B

—
“Around Town on the Web” (“ATOTW”) has been a valued push notification
since the spring of 2004 – long before there were push notifications!

For submission guidelines and answers to frequently asked questions
about “ATOTW”, please go to http://www.atotw.com.
To search for archived “ATOTW” news, view the archive

.
If you would like to be added to this distribution list, click here

.
Please follow the link in the response e-mail to validate your
account.
