Dear fellow Hanoverians:<\/p>\n
The following information came from the Hanover Board of Selectman’s
\nmeeting last Monday, March 7:<\/p>\n
In 2014, Town Meeting approved $500k for a feasibility study for the Center
\nand Sylvester Schools. Last October, the Hanover School Committee
\nunanimously voted to change the future grade level configuration of our two
\nelementary schools with a tentative implementation date of September 2018.
\nIn December, the Hanover School Building Committee voted to adopt a design
\nthat would close the Sylvester School and build an addition on the Center
\nSchool.
\nThe Sylvester building has served Hanover for almost 90 years but it is no
\nlonger a suitable educational facility for many reasons. The townspeople
\nwill have the opportunity voice their opinion and vote on whether or not to
\nsupport the project later this year. However, we must begin a thoughtful
\ndiscussion on the future use of the Sylvester building now to ensure that
\nwe have plan ready to act on when the building is no longer needed as a
\nschool.<\/p>\n
Tonight, the Board of Selectmen will be forming the Sylvester School
\nRedevelopment Committee. Residents interested in serving on the Committee
\nshould contact the Selectmen\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n
Motion to create Sylvester School Redevelopment Committee:<\/p>\n
I move that the Hanover Board of Selectmen create the Sylvester School
\nRedevelopment Committee.
\nThe purpose of this committee is to study the need and feasibility of
\npotential reuses of the Sylvester School, and recommend findings to the
\nBoard of Selectmen. The Committee will serve in an advisory capacity to the
\nBoard of Selectmen.
\nThe Committee, at a minimum shall:
\n\u2022 Develop an understanding of the buildings current characteristics and
\nother relevant issues related to its reuse.
\n\u2022 Develop and implement a process for input and communication with the
\npublic and local government bodies.
\n\u2022 Submit a final report to the Selectmen which includes: options and
\nrecommendations, cost estimates and\/or revenue potential, funding sources,
\nbenefits to the Town, and recommended timeline.<\/p>\n
This motion passed.
