Charlie Gleason\u2019s South Shore
\nSaturday August 20th, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.
\nStetson House Barn, 514 Hanover Street<\/p>\n
Charles Gleason (1880-1979) was a Hanover resident and dry goods peddler
\nwho kept a remarkable documentary record of small town life on the South
\nShore. Beginning in 1908, Gleason used a $2 Brownie box camera to
\nphotograph his family, neighbors, and clients in Hanover and the
\nsurrounding towns. He traveled first with a brightly painted green and
\nyellow wagon and then on a bicycle, taking photos as he went. Gleason put
\nhis photographs into scrapbooks and carefully labeled each person and
\nscene, creating a unique and fascinating source for local history. Views of
\nHanover, Norwell, Pembroke, Marshfield, and Scituate are featured in the
\nscrapbooks, along with his stories, commentary, and humor.<\/p>\n
The Hanover Historical Society has conserved eleven of the scrapbooks and
\nis now involved in a digitization and transcribing project to make these
\navailable to the public. Join the Historical Society on Saturday, August
\n20th, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. to view the scrapbooks and learn more about
\nthe project.
