For the first time ever, South Shore Conservatory (SSC) is offering free
\nparticipation in its SSC Youth Orchestra program for the first 65 students
\nsigning up for private lessons on orchestral instruments at SSC this fall.
\nUnder the direction of Elijah Langille, the orchestra program will be
\noffered virtually for the 2020\/2021 school year. <\/p>\n
Instruments considered orchestra include including string instruments such
\nas violin, viola, cello, and double bass; brass instruments such as the
\nhorn, trumpet, trombone and tuba; woodwind instruments such as flute, oboe,
\nclarinet and bassoon; and percussion instruments such as timpani, bass
\ndrum, triangle, snare drum, cymbals, and mallet percussion instruments.<\/p>\n
SSC Youth Orchestra (SSCYO) is an auditioned, sequential, three-tiered
\nyouth orchestra program that provides an opportunity for young musicians to
\nperform symphonic music at a high level in a well-organized and supportive
\nfull orchestra program. SSCYO meets online Wednesday evenings.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s extremely beneficial for students to perform in a group such as
\nan orchestra, so that they can put into practice skills they learn in their
\nweekly private lesson,\u201d said Langille. \u201cThe earlier they do this, the
\nmore comfortable they become with their instrument.\u201d<\/p>\n
When the orchestra program moved online in March due to COVID-19, Langille,
\nwho conducts the orchestra\u2019s Symphony ensemble, and Repertory ensemble
\nconductor Maria Varonko were concerned their students would not welcome
\nthis new virtual learning experience. They were delighted when students
\nnot only embraced the new platform, but asked for more.<\/p>\n
\u201cSSCYO students have asked us to continue our Zoom sessions throughout
\nthe summer months. They see this as a time to connect with other
\nmusicians, and to find motivation to keep playing,\u201d said Langille.<\/p>\n
Participants in the virtual orchestra can expect fun weekly masterclasses
\ndesigned to connect kids with high quality instruction, as well as with one
\nanother, in an interactive way, plus some individualized instruction. The
\ngroup will also experience and provide music for a virtual gallery walk
\nwith a local artist, perform a holiday favorite for an online sing-along,
\nand celebrate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by virtually performing his work of
\nAve Verum Corpus, arranged by local conductor and composer Steven
\nKaridoyanes. Students will be mentored by members of the Plymouth
\nPhilharmonic to better understand, express, and present this famous work.<\/p>\n
Langille is hopeful the pandemic will be under control by March 2021, in
\ntime for Symphony students to perform in a side-by-side concert on March
\n27, 2021 with the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra. <\/p>\n
