From True Story Theater: \u201cTrue Story Theater is a nonprofit theater
\ncompany that offers over 50 improvisational performances and workshops a
\nyear for community groups, businesses, and individuals in New England and
\nCalifornia. We work with hospitals, universities, corporations, religious
\ncommunities\u2026 for teen leaders, cancer survivors, activists,
\nphilanthropists, business leaders\u2026 as well as for weddings, birthdays,
\nand other important private events.
\nOur mission is to promote social healing through theatre. We perform and
\nteach an embodied theatre of empathy, respect, and creativity. Volunteers
\nfrom the audience are helped to share what\u2019s important in their lives.
\nOn the spot, actors then portray the heart of what they heard using music,
\nmovement, and dialogue.<\/p>\n

\nTheme: “Visible and Invisible Identities”
\nA community story sharing performance and introduction to active bystander
\nskills.
\nWhat\u2019s a True Story show like? Our events bring together the delight of
\nimprovisation with the riveting vulnerability of people sharing their
\npersonal truth. The show\u2019s emcee (called \u201cthe conductor\u201d) facilitates
\nbrief, spontaneous conversations with volunteers from the audience who
\nshare their own feelings and experiences related to the show\u2019s theme.
\nTonight’s sharing will be about the visible or invisible identities we have
\nthat are often not publicly talked about. After each conversation, the
\nactors and a musician sensitively embody the key feelings and actions they
\nheard, using movement, music, dialogue, and superb listening. All of it is
\nimprovised on the spot.
\nPerformance Followed by Interactive Introduction to Active Bystander
\nSkills. Learn how to speak up and interrupt words of bigotry and bias, and
\nbe more open to feedback.

\nActive Bystander Skills Training for Adults and High School age youth.
\nPresented by True Story Theater.
\nAn active bystander is someone who not only witnesses an offensive or
\nthreatening situation, but also speaks up or takes steps to defuse that
\nsituation, or keep it from escalating. Learn how to become a more effective
\nactive bystander.
\nIf you identify as White, Christian, straight, cisgender, and\/or
\nable-bodied, please join the training at 6:30 pm. Affinity group members
\nplease see below for additional pre-training.
\n6:30 – 8:30 p.m. \u2013 2-hour Active Bystander Skills Training
\nWhether we\u2019re at work, school, family gatherings, or on social media, we
\nall witness offensive or threatening situations where we want, but hesitate
\nto intervene. This is an interactive workshop that explores responding to
\neveryday bigotry, being open to receiving feedback, and engaging in
\nconstructive dialogue with someone who has engaged in offensive behavior.
\nWe will practice practical strategies for handling specific situations and
\ndiscover what tools may work best for you.
\nAffinity Group Option:
\n6:00 – 6:30 p.m. \u2013 30-minute Pre-Training Affinity Group for people with
\nnon-dominant identities. If you are a person with one or more non-dominant
\nidentities (e.g., BIPOC, immigrant, Muslim, Queer, living with a physical
\nor cognitive disability), you are invited to join this pre-training
\naffinity group from 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. We will greet each other and have the
\noption to share a synopsis of a personal experience of being disrespected,
\nmarginalized, or feeling unwelcome in Hanover as a resident, student,
\nvisitor, or in your workplace. The Zoom information is the same.

\nWorking Together for Change: An Active Bystander class for Middle School
\nage youth and families.

\nAges 12+ (Middle schoolers and a parent or adult are encouraged to attend
\ntogether.)
\nAn active bystander is someone who not only witnesses an offensive or
\nthreatening situation, but also speaks up or takes steps to defuse that
\nsituation or keep it from escalating.
\nWe all witness situations where we want to do something, but hesitate to
\nintervene, whether we\u2019re at school, the workplace, family gatherings or
\non social media. We\u2019ll focus on looking at our own blind spots as well as
\nhow to address the microaggressions and biases we witness in friends and
\nfamily in an effective and non-aggressive way. We will practice practical
\nstrategies for handling specific situations and discover what tools may
\nwork best for you. Leave this class feeling more empowered and better
\ninformed.
