Did you know that In 1794, the Massachusetts<br \/>\nGeneral Court ordered every town in the Commonwealth to conduct a survey of<br \/>\nboundaries? Each survey map created was a unique, hand-drawn map, listing<br \/>\nnatural features, roads, and mills. Explore how the surveys were conducted<br \/>\nusing surveyor\u2019s compasses and chains to measure out boundaries, and the<br \/>\nimplications of those surveys today. See an original surveyor\u2019s compass,<br \/>\nboundary book for Hanover, and learn how to measure in 18th Century rods,<br \/>\nlinks, and chains. Examples of the maps for the towns of Hanover, Boston,<br \/>\nand the North River towns will be examined to show the artistry of the<br \/>\nskill that went into their creation.
