Depression and Suicide
\nAwareness and Prevention Workshop<\/p>\n
December 11th at 2:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall at
\nFirst Parish of Norwell Unitarian Universalist
\n24 River Street, Norwell<\/p>\n
Do you know how to recognize suicide\u2019s warning signs and risk factors?
\nHow would you talk with a friend if you worried they were depressed or
\nsuicidal? <\/p>\n
Everyone should have answers for those questions, and that\u2019s why everyone
\nis invited to this FREE informational workshop provided by the Samaritans
\nand First Parish of Norwell. The topics are relevant to teens, parents,
\nseniors, and everyone in between. Bring your teen, bring your parent, or
\nbring a friend \u2013 learn this vital information together. Refreshments
\nprovided!<\/p>\n
You will leave the workshop with the skills and knowledge to better
\nunderstand the specific challenges facing a variety of groups, and how to
\nbest help someone who may be struggling. During the workshop, you will
\nlearn how to:
\n\u2022 Learn how to ask directly about suicidal intent and how to best support
\nthose in crisis
\n\u2022 Recognize warning signs and risk factors of suicide
\n\u2022 Find resources to help yourself or a loved one
\n\u2022 Manage stress and develop effective coping skills through discussion,
\nsafety planning, and self-care <\/p>\n
Community connectedness has a role to play in reducing the stigma
\nassociated with suicide and mental illness \u2013 a stigma which inhibits
\npeople from discussing their feelings and challenges. Break the silence and
\ninitiate conversation at this workshop on suicide prevention, mental health
\nand wellness, presented by Samaritans’ Community Education and Outreach
\nteam. <\/p>\n
The mission of Samaritans is to reduce the incidence of suicide by
\nalleviating despair, isolation, distress and suicidal feelings among
\nindividuals in the community, 24 hours a day; to educate the public about
\nsuicide prevention; to help those who have lost a loved one to suicide; and
\nto reduce the stigma associated with suicide.<\/p>\n
