Something else you may see on many of those islands –
signs for the Walnut Hill Garden Club (WHGC). For more than 50 years the
members of the Walnut Hill Garden Club have worked to fulfill their mission
of keeping Hanover beautiful by landscaping and maintaining plantings at
traffic islands and the town rain garden, in addition to providing the
community with garden therapy and educational programs, among many more
projects and initiatives.

So why signs? Walnut Hill Garden Club President Audrey Barresi responded to
that question by saying “we wanted to create more awareness around the
fact that one of the club’s main missions is to be involved in civic
beautification projects. Also, very sadly, we lost several long-term club
members over the last few years, and all those members worked on the
various traffic islands around town, and we thought the signs would be a
nice tribute to them since they put so much care and energy into them.”

The Walnut Hill Garden Club purchased the signs through generous donations
made in the memory of members Tiziana Polizio, Suzanne Mahler and Donna
Collins. Their love and commitment to caring for the community is the
foundation of the work the club does, and the club is proud to honor them.
WHGC Member and Treasurer Jayne Foley worked with town officials for the
better part of 5 months to secure permitting for the signs, which will be
visible in the spring, summer and fall before being removed and stored for
the winter season.

Ever wonder why they’re called the Walnut Hill Garden Club? Helena Quilty
of the Walnut Hill area of Hanover founded the club in 1967, which was a
time when many new people were moving to town. To better accommodate the
growing number of working families, the new garden club met in the evening
instead of during the day. Today membership includes enthusiastic gardeners
of every level of experience from Hanover and surrounding communities. In
addition to traffic island maintenance, the WHGC provides garden therapy
and seasonal floral design workshops for senior citizens and veterans,
support for Hanover High School’s Dirty Work Garden Club as well as
kindergarten planting programs, assistance in maintaining the Stetson House
Garden areas, and presents 3 scholarships annually for graduating students
from both Hanover High School and the South Shore Technical High School.
The WHGC meets monthly for educational talks and hands-on workshops about
all aspects of gardening. New members who would like to roll up their
sleeves to help beautify the community are always welcome.
