Dear fellow Hanoverians:<\/p>\n
The Hanover Woman\u2019s Club, Juniors, a local volunteer organization, is
\ncelebrating its 55th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the club has
\narranged a display of memorabilia showcasing its decades of service. The
\nexhibit is open to the public on the second floor of the John Curtis
\nLibrary throughout September.<\/p>\n
The club\u2019s first meeting was held on May 27, 1970, at the library. Bylaws
\nwere established, the iris chosen as the club flower, and plans made for
\nfuture meetings. On June 17, 1970, the Director of Junior Clubs from the
\nGFWC of Massachusetts officially presented the club\u2019s charter. Two
\ncharter members remain active today\u2014one turned 100 this past May and the
\nother celebrated her 90th birthday.<\/p>\n
Over the decades, the club has led countless projects focused on education,
\nthe arts, and civic engagement. In 1971, they launched a scholarship
\nprogram for Hanover High School seniors\u2014awarding students in the arts,
\ncommunity service, and academics (the latter for children of club members).
\nThe awards continue today.<\/p>\n
Candidates Night, a springtime tradition before town elections, began in
\n1972 and still takes place annually. Children have enjoyed events such as
\nHalloween parades, Breakfast with Santa, and trips to the Boston Symphony
\nfor kids. A major accomplishment came in 1975, when the club raised $2,500
\nto install \u201cElectric Arms\u201d on 19 school buses, improving student
\nsafety.<\/p>\n
The club also led fundraising for the original bandstand at Sylvester Field
\nand contributed to the current one, along with the nearby Veterans
\nMemorial. In 1991 Members joined five local churches to create the Hanover
\nFood Pantry, which they continue to operate and support.<\/p>\n
Members have attended GFWC state meetings and received numerous awards.
\nMost recently, the club was honored for contributions to domestic violence
\nawareness, its continued food pantry work, and supporting a Hanover High
\nstudent attending a youth leadership program.<\/p>\n
Recent projects include crafting comfort bears for local police and fire
\ndepartments, sewing blankets for teens at the Home for Little Wanderers,
\nand assembling 44 “Birthday in a Box” kits for children experiencing
\nhomelessness. Each Christmas, members collect gifts for female veterans at
\nthe VA Medical Center in Brockton. The club\u2019s annual Holiday Auction
\nraises funds for the food pantry, Council on Aging, library, and VNA. Stop
