While last year’s override
bought us much-needed breathing room, Hanover’s residents are maxed out,
and we need to find additional funding sources to ensure our schools’
needs are met without asking residents to continue absorbing additional tax
obligations. If elected, I would work to ensure that we are collaborating
effectively with our elected state representatives to further advocate for
more funding through any available sources, including promoting reforms to
the state calculations for reimbursements through chapter 70 and circuit
breaker. Simply put, the state government needs to contribute more to our
school budgets. Secondly, I would work to enhance our special education
service offerings, creating more robust programs within HPS to provide
specialized educational services for kids in-district. Meeting special
education needs is not optional, and when we can’t do that in district,
the price tag is heavy for taxpayers. It is in Hanover’s financial best
interest to make strategic investments in staff with enhanced special
education certifications to create programs in-district and reduce costly
out of district placements. Strategic long-term planning for major projects
should also be at the heart of our budget work. Two of our four school
buildings are approaching or at the end of their useful life. Starting the
process now to secure state-backed funding for these two buildings is
essential, but we should also be mindful of creating intentionally designed
savings plans for the major repairs and renovations that will need to
happen in 10, 15, 20, and 30 years.
Academically, both the need and want for technical education is soaring,
and I would love to see Hanover become a leader in vocational, technical,
and STEM programming. Hanover students consistently fill our allocated
space at SSVT, and the recent outpouring of resident support for the
Vo-Tech rebuild project proves how much people in this community care about
supporting this academic model. With the current surge in demand for highly
skilled labor, and the cost of traditional 4-year college becoming
increasingly unsustainable, we should strive to create programming
in-district that reflects the need for more tech education on the South
Shore, prepares students for a wider variety of post-graduate educational
paths, and entices future families to settle in Hanover.

Why are you running for this office?
I am running for school committee first and foremost to serve and support
our community. Every single one of us has something we can offer, be it
talent, expertise, or a few hours of our time each week, to improve
Hanover. I am deeply invested in creating an incredible educational
experience for every family in our district. Now, more than ever, we
recognize that school is not just four walls and a chalkboard, but a
critical part of our kids’ social, emotional, athletic, artistic, and
academic foundation for life. Public schools should be a place where all
students are given the tools, classes, space and support to grow, succeed
and thrive. I believe my operations background, enthusiasm and advocacy for
Hanover Public Schools, and community-focused mindset would make me an
asset to the school committee, and I hope to earn your vote on May 16th.”

For “Around Town on the Web”,
Cathy H-B

—
“Around Town on the Web” (“ATOTW”) has been a valued push notification
since the spring of 2004 – long before there were push notifications!

For submission guidelines and answers to frequently asked questions about
“ATOTW”, please go to
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=xodILJYEL7y5AydNykl3Xl9D0tjWnOheomqodMGW6PBoqLt7nDNIRqoN783ZLADJ
To search for archived “ATOTW” news, view the archive

.
If you would like to be added to this distribution list, click here

.
Please follow the link in the response e-mail to validate your account.
