There are two seats open, with three candidates.

“NAME: Jaclyn (Jacky) Jorgenson
CANDIDATE FOR: School Committee
ADDRESS: 20 Circuit Street
TELEPHONE (Cell) NUMBER: 617-571-4241
LENGTH OF RESIDENCY: 18 years

Please list relevant experience (education, vocation, etc.) you feel will
be useful in the office you are seeing.

From 2001 to 2022, I was a public school teacher for Quincy Public Schools.
I spent my first 2 years teaching middle school Language Arts and the rest
of my time teaching high school English. I taught CP, Honors, and AP
courses, as well as 10 years of evening school. Currently, I have 3
daughters in HPS – one at HMS and two at HHS. For the last 3 years, I
have served on Hanover School Committee. During that time, I was part of
the sub-committee that negotiated with the Hanover Teachers Association for
their latest contract. For three years, I have served on the Academic
Working Group subcommittee where we have worked with HPS leadership around
curriculum development, academic excellence, and updating scheduling at HMS
and HHS.

What are the major issues confronting the town which involve your office?
Please express your opinion on these issues and how you propose to deal
with them.

When looking at the future of the school department, there are a couple of
areas that will have to be confronted. First, capital improvements will be
necessary. These improvements include necessary repairs, potential
construction, and infrastructure around technology. I understand a lot of
what needs to be done and believe that district leadership is doing a great
job of prioritizing needs in terms of town budget. Having worked in a
school building that needed a lot of attention around HVAC and building
repairs, I know first-hand how disruptive these needs are to the learning
environment. Hanover will have to make some choices around how and where we
spend money; however, I am happy that the discussion is happening and that
it is happening openly and transparently.

Second, I am very interested in how our district will address AI and
technology resources. I believe that teachers can no longer teach the way
they were taught – the world is changing fast and school districts have
to be realistic, aware, and open-minded when it comes to AI and technology.
I know that the district has spent a good deal of time providing
professional development to teachers around these issues and has factored
professional development and necessary resources into the budget. HMS is
becoming a 1:1 school for devices and I would love to see that expand to
all schools so that all HPS students have equal access to resources.
Additionally, I am very curious about the ways in which professional
development around AI will come alive for students in the classroom and in
course offerings. If elected, I hope to continue participation in the
Academic Working Group where curriculum development is a priority and
focus.

Why are you running for this office?

I am running for office because I have a passion for public education and
believe that a strong public school system is the foundation from which the
town can grow. By their very nature, public school systems develop and
support the future citizens of our towns, our commonwealth, and our
country. When the foundation is strong, the future is even stronger.

When I read through the Strategic Plan for FY 27-29, there are a number of
things about which I am really passionate and I would say that the focus on
curriculum in the coming years is really exciting. The work on academic
growth is something I would be very honored to be a part of in the upcoming
school year. The district will be working on expanding course offerings at
both HHS and HMS to strengthen rigor, offer more choice, and provide
students with options that allow innovative thinking as they move into an
ever-changing work force. For the elementary schools, there is a focus on
English Language Arts with writing and reading initiatives that are being
developed on the available evidence and data. As an English teacher of 21
years, I am very excited to learn more and dig into this. Having worked
with leadership in the Academic Working Group for the last 3 years, I feel
confident that the goals the district has set can be met with great
success.

I originally ran for office 3 years ago because I have a passion for
curriculum and wanted the opportunity to be a positive influence and an
advocate for increased rigor, appropriate support systems, and
forward-thinking changes in scheduling and course offerings. The last 3
years, I have found that district leadership has great vision and has been
doing the work on all of these things. They were understandably limited in
what they could implement and much attention had to be devoted to budget;
however, I believe that moving forward, everything is in place to make
great strides in academics and curriculum. I believe that the vision for
the future is strong and the foundation for success has been established –
it is something that I would be very proud to support.”

For “Around Town on the Web”,
Cathy H-B

—
“Around Town on the Web” (“ATOTW”) has been a valued push notification
since the spring of 2004 – long before there were push notifications!

For submission guidelines and answers to frequently asked questions about
“ATOTW”, please go to
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=xodILJYEr7y5AydNykl3XldznT9K6VYFv1PSgiQHpz5oqLt7nDOYRqoN783ZLADJ
To search for archived “ATOTW” news, view the archive

.
If you would like to be added to this distribution list, click here

.
Please follow the link in the response e-mail to validate your account.
