There are two seats open and three candidates.

“NAME: Peter Miraglia
CANDIDATE FOR: School Committee
ADDRESS: 710 Center St.
TELEPHONE (Cell) NUMBER: 508-524-3967
LENGTH OF RESIDENCY: 11 years

Please list relevant experience (education, vocation, etc.) you feel will
be useful in the office you are seeing.

I’ve had the pleasure of serving in a number of leadership and management
roles in my profession, in addition to two, three-year terms on the Hanover
School Committee, with the last two years serving as chair of the
committee.
I also have 10 years of experience in higher education as an adjunct
professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and University of
Massachusetts at Lowell.
I hold the following degrees in engineering: Ph.D., Master of Science, and
Bachelor of Science.

What are the major issues confronting the town which involve your office?
Please express your opinion on these issues and how you propose to deal
with them.

Here are four topics at the top of my list, which deserve long term
planning and goal setting in this next term. Should you choose me again to
represent you as a school committee member, my energy will be devoted to
seeing them through.

Curriculum: Student achievement a bottom line for the school committee.
This past year was a banner year for achievement! I am grateful to my
fellow committee members and administrators in the academic working group,
who are focused on long range planning for curriculum. Some new and
exciting opportunities are being rolled out for students this coming year,
including a rotating schedule and new course offerings at HHS tailored
towards personal finance and careers in health care. I will continue to
push for district goals that seek creative ways like these, to increase
student opportunities and achievements while budgets and service levels
remain neutral.

Sustainable funding: Budget has been all consuming over the past few years
and as a result, I have made it a priority as chair to put the focus back
on academics this year. At the same time I see another set of crossroads
for schools as municipal budgets tighten. You don’t have to look too far
beyond Hanover to see the structural issues playing out and what other
towns are experiencing. While Hanover has risen above the pack in the
passing of our override, it’s no secret that we have a budget challenge
coming in 2029. In this coming term, it will be my priority to collaborate
and advocate with town leadership to find a path to keep school budgets and
service levels sustainable into the 2030s.

Infrastructure: It’s also no secret that we have infrastructure in need
of repair and replacement. We’ve prepared a large warrant article for
this year’s annual town meeting to repair roofs, HVAC, and gym floors this
year (across HHS, HMS, and Cedar). Should you vote in favor of this article
at ATM, these repairs will get us through the next 5 years. At this time
next year, however, we as a community will need to decide the fate and
future path of the Hanover Middle School (HMS) beyond these immediate
repairs. Do we keep HMS beyond its useful life or plan on a new building?
This is a big decision and I will devote my time to enable an informed,
data driven, and objective decision.

Artificial Intelligence: While AI gets the headline and it seems every day
to be growing into an amorphous existential blob, this topic deserves a
broader discussion of technology in and outside of the classroom. While I
am a huge proponent of STEM and believe generally that society benefits
from technology, it needs to be used in the right way. AI introduces just
as many opportunities as challenges in the education world. I will be
pushing to set goals for the school district to educate itself and
ultimately set policy for effective use of AI and information technology
over the next few years.

?
Why are you running for this office?

I am running for a third term because I have come to love public service,
the mission of educating our young citizens, and the power of community.
We moved to Hanover in 2015 because of the strong, close-knit community and
the high quality of public education. I saw Hanover Schools punching above
its weight in teaching and instruction for its size and available
resources. I want our district to stay true to that character and continue
to up its game.
I want to see Hanover schools consistently grow its high performance
profile by increasing student opportunities and achievement. Put together,
we set our students up for lifelong success when their achievements are met
with ever-increasing opportunities presented to them.
High performing districts start with good governance. I will continue
relentlessly provide good governance through leadership, integrity,
accountability, and transparency. I have done this with intention in the
past and will continue to put in the hard work.
The last six years have been very challenging for everyone. People often
say to me that they are sorry for all that I experienced in the first 2
terms. My response is that I would not change a thing- it was an experience
of a lifetime, built so many great relationships, and had a front-line
opportunity to advocate for our students.
In the next three years I also want to get beyond just problem solving and
crisis management. This past year was a time of rebuilding and reinventing.
I want to continue on this path, help build new ways of thinking about
education, new capabilities, new approaches, and greater opportunities for
our students.”

For “Around Town on the Web”,
Cathy H-B

—
“Around Town on the Web” (“ATOTW”) has been a valued push notification
since the spring of 2004 – long before there were push notifications!

For submission guidelines and answers to frequently asked questions about
“ATOTW”, please go to
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=xodILJYEv7y5AydNykl3XtZbVd7xesYjk+bmcR0gir5oqLt7nDMIRqoN783ZLADJ
To search for archived “ATOTW” news, view the archive

.
If you would like to be added to this distribution list, click here

.
Please follow the link in the response e-mail to validate your account.
