Dear fellow Hanoverians:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cATOTW\u201d reader and pediatrician Susan =
\nMartin recently
\nsent me some great information.\u00a0 It struck a chord with me because =
\nI am
\nroutinely hollering at my kids to wear their bike helmets, especially as =
\nthey
\nget older.\u00a0 Did you know that it is a state law that children under =
\n16 need to
\nwear a helmet?\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I realized that it was up to =
\nage 16; what great
\nammunition to quote to a reluctant teenager!\u00a0 It surely was of =
\nconcern to her
\nbecause she sees what happens when kids don\u2019t wear helmets.\u00a0 =
\nShe
\nspecifically mentioned seeing LOTS of kids in Hanover riding without =
\nhelmets
\nthis summer; hence her e-mail to me, and this one to you.\u00a0 =\n<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the text of the law for your =
\ninformation:\n<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAny person 16 years of age or younger =
\noperating a
\nbicycle or being carried as a passenger on a bicycle on a public way, =
\nbicycle
\npath or on any other public right-of-way shall wear a helmet. Said =
\nhelmet shall
\nfit the person’s head, shall be secured to the person’s head by straps =
\nwhile
\nthe bicycle is being operated, and shall meet the standards for helmets
\nestablished by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z 90.4) =
\nor
\nsubsequent standards or the Snell Memorial Foundation’s nineteen hundred =
\nand
\neighty-four standard for use in bicycling or subsequent =
\nstandards.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The law goes one step further as it addresses =
\nin-line skates
\nand other wheeled vehicles for kids:\n<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAny person 16 years of age or younger =
\noperating in
\nline skates, a skate board, a scooter or other manually-propelled =
\nwheeled
\nvehicle or riding as a passenger on any such manually-propelled vehicle =
\non a
\npublic way, bicycle path or on any other public right-of-way shall wear =
\na
\nhelmet. Such helmet shall fit the person\u2019s head and be secured by =
\nstraps
\nat all times while operating in line skates, scooters, skate board or =
\nother
\nmanually-propelled wheeled vehicle and shall meet the standards for =
\nhelmets
\nestablished by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z 90.4) =
\nor
\nsubsequent standards or the Snell Memorial Foundation\u2019s 1984 =
\nstandard for
\nuse in bicycling or subsequent standards.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
