The Friends of the John Curtis Library have embarked upon their annual
\nfundraising drive. In an effort to trim costs but still meet the needs of
\nthe library, their annual appeal for new members follows in this postage and
\npaper-saving appeal. Please take a moment to read the following information
\nand send in your membership donation today!<\/p>\n
The goal of the Friends of the John Curtis Library is to support our town
\nlibrary and assist in improving its services, resources, and role in the
\ncommunity. Did you know that only 1% of tax money goes to public libraries
\nin Massachusetts (based on the most recent Department of Revenue figures),
\nand it is estimated that Massachusetts libraries return $4 to the community
\nfor every $1 taxpayers spend? Your membership would benefit our town in so
\nmany ways when budget cuts are pending. <\/p>\n
This past year membership dollars enabled children and parents to take part
\nin bullying and friendship workshops, provided adults with a series of
\nemployment workshops that were run by an employment specialist, and afforded
\nteens with a Wii system around which some safe, social time could be spent.<\/p>\n
Membership dollars were also at work this past year when the Friends:<\/p>\n
*\trenewed passes to the New England Aquarium, the John F. Kennedy
\nMuseum, Zoo New England, and the South Shore Natural Science Center;
\n*\thosted the "Two Old Friends" who played the traditional music of the
\nBritish Isles, songs from Appalachia, and music from the days of American
\nsailing ships;
\n*\tsponsored classical music concerts by Inna Muravnik with the Hanover
\nCultural Council;
\n*\tco-sponsored Kite Day with the Hanover Cultural Council by bringing
\nDon McCasland of the Blue Hill Observatory to teach children how to make and
\nfly kites;
\n*\tfunded an eight-week Spanish story hour program for children in both
\nthe spring and fall;
\n*\tprovided many additional events for children including a live animal
\nprogram, several concerts, and a visit with Hedwig the Owl from the South
\nShore Natural Science Center.<\/p>\n
Thanks to the Friends, almost all of the library’s programs this past year
\nhave been provided free of charge. Membership is one of the Friends’
\ngreatest sources of revenue. Without your help, the Friends truly wouldn’t
\nbe able to offer these enhancements when people are using the library more.
\nEven a small contribution makes a significant difference — become a member
\nfor as little as $10 per year. Your contribution will also earn you special
\n"Member Only" advance entrance to their annual book sale in May.<\/p>\n

\nSponsor $50
\nPatron $100
\nBenefactor $500<\/p>\n

\nFriends; it is an investment in our community.<\/p>\n
P.S. You can also support the library by donating gently-used books to the
\nbook sale room throughout the year and by making purchases of donated books.
\nBooks, CDs, DVDs, and puzzles are organized and sell at bargain basement
\nprices.<\/p>\n
