The Hanover VNA would like to invite all Hanover residents and friends to
\ntheir annual Open Meeting which will be held on Tuesday, April 13th, at 1:00
\np.m. in the Town Hall Meeting Room. <\/p>\n
The guest speaker will be Shirley Harrow, a retired 76 year-old nurse from
\nQuincy, who has been working for nine years to try to get recognition and
\nveteran’s status for the Cadet nurses who provided 80 percent of the nursing
\ncare in this country both in civilian and military hospitals during World
\nWar II. Although Shirley was too young to be a Cadet nurse herself, she
\nbecame passionately involved in their cause after interviewing a former
\ncadet nurse who was leading a grass roots effort to have the corps members
\nwork recognized.<\/p>\n
The young women who served in the Cadet Nurse Corps were actively recruited
\nby the U.S. Public Health Service, an agency which was militarized during
\nWorld War II. Of the about 124,000 women who graduated from the corps
\nbetween 1943 and 1948, it is estimated that only a few thousand are still
\nliving. Ms. Harrow has talked with many of these women and will undoubtedly
\nshare some of their stories as well as information about her fight to gain
\nthem the recognition and benefits to which she feels they are entitled.<\/p>\n
Refreshments will be served following the program.<\/p>\n
