Christopher Carney, candidate for the Hanover Board of Selectmen

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Below please find the Candidate Information Sheet exactly as submitted by
the fourth of the four candidates for Selectman, Christopher Carney. To
review any previous Candidate Information Sheets, please go to the ATOTW
archives! The link to the archives is found at the bottom of every ATOTW
e-mail.

Name: Chris Carney
Office Seeking: Board of Selectmen
Address: 61 Stone Meadow Lane
Telephone Number: 508-468-7000 (cell)
Length of Residency: 15 years

Please list relevant experience (education, vocation, etc.) you feel will
be useful in the office you are seeking.

A business owner with 30+ years’ experience, I currently employ over 150
hardworking people. I know how business owners think and what it will take
to bring them to Route 53 and our commercial areas. The commercial
development of Route 53 critically important to lowering our residential
tax rate and relieving the financial burden our residents are feeling,
especially the elderly. My experience working with the Plymouth County
Sheriff’s Department will help me work closely with our police and fire
departments. Through my experience in local, commercial and residential
construction, I’ve overseen the building of roads, waterways and sewer
systems which will help me work closely with our town planning and zoning
boards. Like most people reading this, I also pay taxes in Hanover, which
I’m happy to do, but want to make sure that the taxes we pay are spent
properly and responsibly.

What are the major issues confronting the town which involve your office?
Please express your opinion on these issues and how you propose to deal
with them.

The commercial expansion of Route 53 is critical if we want to reduce the
residential tax burden we’re all feeling right now. I support the Tax
Increment Financing (TIF) agreement with the new owners of the mall and am
confident that with creative, collective, outside the box thinking the
expansion can happen sooner rather than later and exceed all expectations.
We need housing in Hanover that everyone can afford, especially our
elderly. Property taxes are too high for our elderly to afford and when I
hear people say, “They can sell”, my response is always the same:
“They have no place to go!” We need affordable senior housing in
Hanover and I’ll work to make that a reality. My background in
construction project management will help. It’s also imperative that we
streamline our processes and make our local government more transparent.
Our town website is great, but almost impossible for the average person
navigate, making it difficult to know when and where local boards are
meeting and what will be on the agenda for a particular meeting. The
information is there but difficult to find. I’ll work to streamline the
process. Of course I would always encourage ANY resident of Hanover to call
me anytime on my personal cell number above or by email at
redcarney@aol.com with questions. Finally, it’s inexcusable that many of
our residents deal with water that isn’t clean. Residents have been
complaining about it for years now and its inexcusable that for any reason
other than hydrant flushing (which is posted) that our residents can’t
rely on the town to provide clean drinking water. If the town expects you
to pay for it, you should expect it to be clean. If you live in the areas
of town affected by brown water, know that I will always have your back.

Why are you running for this office?

At this point in life my kids are older and I have the time to give back to
the community that’s given my family so much. Hanover has accomplished so
much over the years through the hard work and efforts by town employees,
board members and volunteers and really is in a position to flourish. I’m
confident that through my experience, both as a 15 year resident of the
town and business owner, that I will serve the residents of this town with
pride and if given the opportunity, will make them proud.

Thank you for your support and May 6th!

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Postal Workers’ Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is almost here
again! It will be held Saturday, May 13, 2017. There will be a
combination of food drive volunteers and postal service workers making the
rounds. The Hanover Food Pantry is in serious need of volunteers on that
day again this year. What better way to support residents of our town in
need? Please consider volunteering at the food pantry! It is also a great
way for those who need service hours to accrue some time for a good cause.

The good folks at the Hanover Food Pantry need:

• Drivers and gatherers (beginning as early as 10:30 a.m. or anytime up
through 3:30 p.m.) to go out on assigned routes for food pick-up. Take a
long route or a short route, no matter what; your help will be appreciated.
You’ll be given a map, and you will bring the food you gather back to the
pantry.

• Sorters to be stationed at the pantry from 11:30 a.m. through 5:30
p.m., in two hour shifts. Feel free to stay as long as you like. The food
pantry will supply water, soda, coffee or tea and PB&J sandwiches, along
with hard work and a good time.

Anyone wishing to volunteer to drive and pick up or sort donations can do
so by e-mailing Sally Lovett Boutin at kidsense@comcast.net or calling her
at 781-826-6485, or on her cell at 781-799-0053 (texting also available).

Remember that all collected food stocks the shelves of our very own Hanover
Food Pantry for our friends and neighbors in need. The food that is
gathered each year at the Postal Workers Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive
sees those in need through the summer when the churches, civic
organizations, schools and other groups stop or slow their regular
collections. Your support will be greatly appreciated.
Regardless of your ability to volunteer to help that day, please don’t
forget to donate your food to the town-wide drive on May 13th!

Thank you.
Sally Lovett Boutin
Food Pantry President

Town Meeting ends in one night

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

For the first time in quite some time, Annual Town Meeting ended in one
night this year.

Highlights of the night included the approval of our $57,633,712 budget,
the creation of a committee to study and report on the “multi-use
recreational facility” (the former “Build-a-Boards”), and the failure of
the motion to legally tie the town to paint the Town Hall white in
perpetuity. The color of Town Hall will instead be decided on the ballot
on Election Day.

Usually this late-night post-Town-Meeting first-night-update includes the
date and time of our next session, but surprisingly, that date is Election
Day, Saturday, May 6th, from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Instead, I will mention the complete success of the electronic Poll Pad use
at check-in for Town Meeting! Let’s hope that the legislative process
provides funding so that we can use them again next year.

If you have further questions about the results of the Town’s decisions
this evening, feel free to contact me, Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier,
at 781-826-5000 x1079 or catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov . In the
meantime, congratulations to all involved in this year’s meeting! It’s a
wrap!
