Field Hockey wins South Sectional Championship for the first time in the program’s history

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover head coach Judy Schneider’s varsity field hockey team handed Judy
her 500th victory earlier this season, and then made it to the South
Sectional Finals for only the second time in the program’s history last
week.

The Lady Indians did not stop there.

Earlier today, the Hanover varsity field hockey team won their first ever
South Sectional Championship by a score of 1-0 over Cohasset in an amazing
double overtime “sudden victory” win. Senior wing Maura Kelly put the ball
in the net after an amazing pass from senior captain and center forward Sam
Taylor with less than a minute left on the clock before penalty strokes.

The game started slowly for the Indians, with Cohasset dominating the game
for the better part of the first half. Some timely substitutions helped to
shift the momentum a little before the half was over, but the game remained
tied at 0 at the first horn. Midfielder Chachie Smigliani controlled the
field for Hanover, with great support from defenders Jen Rosinski, Brielle
Prouty and Jess Gardiner. Both teams only had two shots on net in the
first half; it was a true defensive effort on both sides of the ball.

Hanover came out stronger in the second half and had a few more scoring
chances, but again, both teams came up short by the time regulation ended.
In the first overtime, which features a modified 7 v. 7 format, Hanover
began to control the ball more. Our skills and conditioning really started
to shine. Coach Schneider called on play-maker and lead scorer Sam Taylor
to work some of her patented magic in order to get the ball in the net, but
at the end of the first overtime, the score was still tied at 0. Hanover
truly dominated the second 7 v. 7 overtime period, also, but it looked like
we were headed to the penalty stroke round. As the clock ticked down and I
grabbed Judy’s penalty stroke line-up in anticipation of the next phase of
the game, Maura Kelly put the ball in the net for the “sudden victory” win.
No need for strokes; Hanover had the win!

Congratulations to the entire team for a well-deserved victory and for
making Hanover Field Hockey history. I’ve got news for you, dear readers,
this team does not intend to stop anytime soon. When they heard this
afternoon that perennial champion Watertown beat Manchester-Essex by a
score of 4-0 in the North Divisional finals, they were undaunted, and said
“bring them on!” What a gift these kids are to Coach Schneider in this
exceptional year!

Hanover plays North Divisional Champion Watertown on Tuesday at Canton High
School. Game time was unknown as of this writing. Go to

Gooooooooo Indians!

Holiday Fairs highlight Hanover resident’s children’s book

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Kate MacLeod Emery, a long time Hanover resident and author of the Muffy
MacMouse series of children’s books about caring and sharing, is
introducing her new book, “Muffy MacMouse Comes to Paragon Park”. She
will be at the St. Andrews Episcopal Church Holiday Fair, 17 Church St.
Hanover, on Friday, November 13th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

This latest book will allow children to join Muffy in a dream that takes
them back in time to a wonderful place that no longer exists, called
Paragon Park. They will enjoy Lahage’s salt water taffy, frozen custard,
cotton candy and enter through the bright yellow edifice that once was the
entrance to the park. Inside the park they will ride all the old rides.
After their rides they will stroll along Nantasket Avenue and reach the
Paragon Carousel. The carousel was once the beautiful centerpiece located
in the middle of the park. Now, it is the only ride that was saved from
the auction block and brought to its present location on Nantasket Ave.
They will come out of their dream, and hop on the ponies riding up and down
into the future.

Kate will also be signing her books at the Hanover Club’s Holiday Gift Show
on Sunday, Nov. 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Hanover High
School. For more information, please contact Kate at kateemery@msn.com .

Field hockey earns South Sectionals Finals berth for first time since 1993

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Number 2 seeded Hanover High School varsity field hockey team continued
their winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Holliston today in
the Division 2 South Sectional Semi-Finals. The Lady Indians took the
field in the sideways rain and were undaunted, and Sam Taylor scored with
18 minutes left in the first half on an assist from Brielle Prouty to seal
the win.

Holliston fought back hard in the second half with the ball rarely leaving
their offensive end. No matter, Hanover’s defense played up to all of
their hype and kept the ball out of the net. Senior goalie Molly Cameron,
who has had only four goals scored on her in 21 games, earned the shutout
with a solid defensive effort in front of her from sweeper Erica Nelson,
stopper back Jen Rosinski, and fullback Jessica Gardner among others.

With today’s win, Hanover earned their first South Sectional Division Two
final berth since 1993. I, as your intrepid reporter, humbly mention that
I was also an assistant coach back in 1993 with 500+ win head coach Judy
Schneider, and we both think this team equals if not exceeds that team.
This is simply a remarkably special group of young ladies, and I personally
think they have it in them to pull off what has never been accomplished in
Hanover High School history – a South Sectional Final Championship. Let’s
do this!

The Indians take the field on Saturday, November 21 against Cohasset, the
number one seed, at Oliver Ames High School in Easton. Game time is 11:00
a.m. Come join us!

Congrats on a great season!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Please join me in congratulating the Hanover girls’ varsity volleyball team
for making it to the state tournament for the first time in a few years.
Here is the round-up from their game:

Hanover girls volleyball traveled to Sandwich for the first round of the
MIAA D2 State tournament. The girls lost 3-1. After dropping the first two
sets, Hanover battled back to win the 3rd set but ultimately fell to a
tough Sandwich team in the 4th set.

Junior Meaghan Raab had 7 kills, 5 aces, and 2 blocks. Senior Emily
Hennessy had 7 kills, and 5 digs. Senior Caroline O’ Rourke had 4 aces in
the match bringing her to 85 total aces this season, which is good for 14th
in the state of Massachusetts, and 3rd in Massachusetts Division 2. It was
a great game all around and a great send off for the 7 seniors that played
their final match. The seniors include Kylie Chetwynde, Caroline
O’Rourke, Annika Rowland, Melanie Armstrong, Alyssa Delahunt, Emily
Hennessy, and Emma Hardy.

Editor’s note: thanks to JV Coach Colleen Smith for sending me this info!
And wait, Annika and Caroline are seniors?!? And Lissie, too? (well, that
one I knew..) Yikes! Congrats, girls…it’s been fun watching you grow
up! And congrats to your classmates, too. :)
