History and Nature Walk through Sylvester Field

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

History and Nature Walk through Sylvester Field

Saturday, September 14, 2024, 1:00 p.m., 129 Washington Street, Hanover

Join Hanover Historical Society President John Galluzzo for a walking tour
of Sylvester Field, one of the oldest historic landscapes in town.
Sylvester Field was in use for centuries from the 17th into the 20th for
farming and haying. This ten-acre parcel located on Washington Street and
stretching down to the Third Herring Brook has never been developed and
looks much like it has for the past few hundred years. It was purchased by
the Wildlands Trust with help from Hanover’s Community Preservation Act
funds and many individual donors in 2021. The tour will explore the history
and wildlife of this preserved piece of Hanover’s agricultural past and
its importance for today.

Parking is limited, so it is suggested to park at Four Corners and walk
down to the field. The tour will take place rain or shine, unless the
weather is extreme. Parts of Sylvester Field may be wet, marshy, or muddy,
please dress accordingly.

For more information, please go to the Hanover Historical Society’s website
at www.hanoverhistoricalsociety.com or e-mail hanhistdirector@gmail.com .

Apply now for community arts, humanities and science grants through the Hanover Cultural Council

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Apply now for community arts, humanities and science grants through the
Hanover Cultural Council!
Proposals for arts, humanities, and science programs are due October 16

Have you ever wondered what happens with the funds raised at Hanover Day?
Money from our annual celebration, plus Hanover’s share of state cultural
funds, is used to support arts, science, and humanities projects throughout
the year.

Between September 1 and October 16, 2024, the Hanover Cultural Council will
accept applications from organizations, schools, and individuals for grants
to fund cultural activities in Hanover. These grants can support a variety
of arts, science, and humanities projects, including exhibits, festivals,
field trips, short-term artist residencies or performances in schools,
workshops, and lectures.

This year’s allocation to Hanover from the Massachusetts Cultural Council
(MCC) is $8,400, and additional funds are available thanks to the past
success of Hanover Day. The Council will meet later this fall to review the
applications and award the grants.

Past events have included the Summer Concert Series by the Parks and
Recreation Department, the Drama Club programs at South Shore Vo-Tech,
funding for the Hanover Performing Arts Company, painting workshops, Museum
of Science Outreach program at Cedar Elementary School, several museum
passes and children’s programs at the John Curtis Free Library, and
sponsorships of programs for the Walnut Hill Garden Club, South Shore
Natural Science Center, Hanover senior center, and many others.

The Hanover Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural
Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The state
legislature provides an annual appropriation to the MCC, a state agency,
which then allocates funds to each community. Local councils are allowed to
raise additional money through events like Hanover Day.

Applications and more information about the program are available online at

Gallery

.

For more information, contact Chris Haraden, Hanover Cultural Council
Chair, at (781) 254-3131, or charaden@comcast.net.

Mosquito-borne diseases and related risk

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I have fielded a couple of questions at work regarding mosquito-borne
diseases and the related risk in Hanover. The good news is that the risk
for West Nile Virus (WNV) is currently “low”, and the risk for Eastern
Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is currently “remote” in Hanover. Nevertheless,
the risk does change over time, and it can’t hurt to take precautions and
learn more about what you can do to reduce your risk going forward this
fall and before we have a hard frost.

Thanks to Steve Ryerson for assembling the following information!

Recommendations for Prevention:

• Plymouth County Mosquito Control Project
The Plymouth County Mosquito Control Project accepts requests for adult
mosquito control from Hanover residents. Residents can call up to eight
times per season to be sprayed, barring any spray restrictions in the area.
The spray used will kill the mosquitoes in the area at the time of
spraying. Residents must call, fax, or mail us each time they have a
mosquito problem.
Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Office Phone: 781-585-5450
Fax: 781-582-1276
Pesticide applications are made via an ultra-low-volume sprayer on the back
of a pickup truck. Typically, spraying is done from the street and can
travel up to 300 feet. Weather permitting, the sprayers operate from 2:00
a.m. to a half hour before sunrise each weekday. When I was at Town Hall
on Tuesday at 4:30 a.m., the spray truck was driving through the back
parking area! Additional information may be found on the Plymouth County
Mosquito Control Project website, found here:
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=J1mDMRRmSDGuE3li5WJDkKMvHKhcUIEIg/lyvkh2065oqLt7nDNYRqoN783ZLADJ
.

• Apply mosquito repellent with an EPA-registered ingredient.
• Wear clothing to reduce exposed skin when weather permits.
• Eliminate standing water to prevent mosquito breeding.
• Ensure your window screens are intact to prevent mosquitoes from
entering your home.
• Be mindful of peak mosquito activity at dusk and dawn.

Hanover Health Office
Visit the Town of Hanover’s Mosquitoes and Ticks resources and live risk
maps found here:

illness and disease.
Additional information, including all WNV and EEE positive results, may be
