Coastsweep coordinator needed

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
As a resident of a town without a coast, I at first balked at this
submission to “Around Town on the Web” thinking it did not pertain
to us. Upon further review, I can see that our lovely shores of the
North River, our cherished parks, or other bodies of water in town may
benefit from the below described efforts. Read on!
COASTSWEEP Coordinator Needed in Hanover
COASTSWEEP, sponsored by the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone
Management and coordinated by the Urban Harbors Institute at the
University of Massachusetts Boston, is the State’s annual coastal
cleanup program where volunteers not only remove trash but also
collect important information about the types of trash they encounter.
This year is COASTSWEEP’s 25th anniversary and we are attempting to
have a record number of cleanups. They are currently looking for an
individual or organization to help coordinate a cleanup in Hanover.
COASTSWEEP cleanups take place in September and October. The
coordinator gets to select the location and date of the cleanup as
well as recruit volunteers for their event, and over-see things on the
day of the event. The size of the event is not important. Cleanups can
happen in parks or along any water body in town. COASTSWEEP will
provide everything needed for a safe, successful cleanup, including
gloves, garbage bags, and data cards to record what kind of trash is
picked up.
See their website at www.coastsweep.umb.edu

for more information.
Please contact Keith Cialino at 617-287-5570
or keith.cialino001@umb.edu
if you would like to sign up as a coordinator or know someone who
would.

Volunteer member of Parks and Recreation Committee sought

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Town Moderator Doug Thomson is currently seeking volunteer applicants
for an anticipated open seat on the Parks and Recreation Committee.
This opening is to fill an unexpired three year term for the remaining
two years of the term. The position requires monthly Parks and
Recreation Committee meeting attendance on the first Tuesday of the
month and potential additional responsibilities or meetings as
assigned and/or welcomed by the member.
The position will be open effective September 1st, 2012, concurrent
with the end of the summer program and in anticipation of the start of
the new fall programs. The successful applicant should be prepared to
attend the September meeting (date to be announced due to the
anticipated conflict with the start of school) as the yearly committee
reorganization process will occur at that time. High on the
committee’s to-do list over the next two years will be the
completion of the Forge Pond Park Complex located off King Street, and
re-visiting the Parks and Recreation Master Plan that was completed in
the fall of 2007 and that is now potentially eligible for Community
Preservation funding due to a change in CPA legislation that became
effective July 1, 2012.
For further information or to express interest in this position,
please contact Moderator Doug Thomson at moderator@hanover-ma.gov
