“What are we eating?” with the Y

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The South Shore YMCA in Hanover, the South Shore Natural Science
Center and Sustainable Hanover are collaborating to empower and
educate healthy eating, sustainability, community connection and
environmental responsibility through a thought-provoking film series
called /What ARE We Eating??? /

“Our collaborative effort began with an idea to build a garden in
2009” says Kim Engle, Arts and Education Director at the South Shore
YMCA; “we collaborated with Sustainable Hanover and found ourselves
with a portable greenhouse, a successful sustainability fundraising
event and the realization that we need to do more education.”
Sustainable Hanover and the South Shore YMCA continued their joint
efforts with a few small film events, kids’ events and teen events.
In September of 2011, the Y began its official partnership with the
South Shore Natural Science Center and the film series was realized.

This month’s film will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the South Shore
Natural Science Center on:

/March 15, 2012/
*/The True Cost of Food/*–brought to us by the Sierra Club’s
National Sustainable Consumption Committee, addresses the importance
of eating locally to think globally. “Most of the world’s problems
can’t be fixed by individual action: disease, war, and poverty require
concentrated efforts by policy makers and governments. But ONLY
consumers can affect the way food is grown and transported; this is an
area where our actions make a difference. If we buy food that’s grown
sustainably, supply will follow demand and it will become more
available. When it becomes obvious that small farmers can make a
decent living, more young people will be able to start farming.” –
