Third Annual Matheny Baseball Camp

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Long time readers will know that some of my favorite “Around Town on
the Web” e-mail requests come from Hanover’s future leaders –
our students. The following is no exception. In fact, I have reprinted
the request in its entirety because not only is it well written, but
it also speaks volumes of both Steve Matheny (a former Hanover High
School student leader) and Ryan Kelleher (a current Hanover High
student leader).
“I am organizing the Third Annual Matheny Baseball Camp that has
been offered the past two years over April vacation to young baseball
players ages 8 – 12 in the town of Hanover. The High School baseball
program will offer campers instruction in fielding, hitting, base
running and pitching. We will have live games, fun drills, and
baseball specific exercises. There will be t-shirts given and pizza on
the last day. The cost of the program is $50.00 and it runs Monday,
April 15th thru Friday April 19th, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
All proceeds benefit the Steven J. Matheny Foundation. Steve’s story
is one of inspiration, resilience and sheer determination. Steve was
the most revered player ever to wear the Hanover High School Hockey
jersey. Steve was first diagnosed with Leukemia during his sophomore
year of high school at age 16. Immediately upon diagnosis, Steve vowed
to do one thing and one thing only…return to the ice. Steve’s dream
came true as he battled his way into remission and played his entire
junior season for Hanover High School, winning the school’s first
state championship in the process. During Steve’s senior campaign, he
was readmitted to the hospital where it was discovered he had fallen
out of remission. Although he fought valiantly until the very end, all
the while never once uttering a single complaint, Steve succumbed to
his illness on August 1, 1998. We ask you to celebrate Steve’s life
and legacy by supporting a scholarship fund in Steve’s name.
I am kindly requesting your support with the Matheny Baseball Camp by
forwarding this to the people of Hanover.

Thank you for your consideration,
Ryan Kelleher”
