Hanover to receive funding for state elections

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Hanover Town Clerk Cathy Harder-Bernier today announced that the Town
of Hanover has received $17,470 in state funding to reimburse the town
for election expenses incurred during the April 2013 State Primary and
the June 2013 State Election to fill the vacancy in the U. S. Senate
caused by John Kerry’s resignation.
“I am grateful to the Legislature, the Secretary of the Commonwealth
William Galvin’s office, the Division of Local Mandates, and Auditor
Suzanne Bump’s office for following through on reimbursing the town
for these unanticipated expenses. I am also thankful for the
assistance of Victor Diniak of the Department of Public Works who was
helpful to me as I prepared the cost certifications for the Town.”
Harder-Bernier reported these anticipated revenues in September to
Finance Director Janine Smith and the Selectmen subsequently followed
her recommendation to record the proceeds as a general fund receipt
for FY13 and close it to free cash.
Additionally, Harder-Bernier stated that the town will receive $3,654
to cover already anticipated expenses for the September 2014 State
Primary and the November 2014 State Election. “This funding has been
provided by the Legislature since it enacted Chapter 503 of the Acts
of 1983 to defray the costs of the legislation that established
statewide polling hours for state elections, also known as the Uniform
Polling Hours Act. It is provided in advance of the elections and
allows us to stay open a full thirteen hours on those two days. While
it is only a portion of the expenses incurred by the Town, it is
nevertheless an appreciated source of revenue”, Harder-Bernier said.
