Temporary Transfer Station Operational Changes

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Town of Hanover is really doing a great job of updating the public with
COVID-19 updates. But, in this age of information overload, it’s hard to
know what to watch or read and what can wait. What should you subscribe
to, what can be ignored? The information flow is tremendous, and
sometimes overwhelming. As one of our public officials said to me the
other day, it’s like trying to take a sip of water from a fire hose!

That being said, in case you missed this, I thought I would re-send,
because it will affect all of us on Friday (tomorrow as I write this).
Thanks to Victor, Ken, Gardner and the whole crew at the transfer station
for keeping this essential service available to all of us.

Temporary Transfer Station Operational Changes
Effective April 3, 2020
As a measure to prevent and mitigate the spread of potential COVID-19
exposure and in the interest of the health and well-being of our employees
and residents of the Town of Hanover, the Town will be temporarily
adjusting some operational procedures at the Transfer Station. These
adjustments are being made in an effort to enhance social distancing
practices at the Transfer Station.

Effective April 3, 2020, the recycling of paper, cardboard, plastic, glass,
and cans will be temporarily suspended. The traditional recycling areas
for these items will be closed off and residents are asked to dispose of
these items in the main pit at the Transfer Station.

The process for recycling/disposal of fee-based items (furniture,
mattresses, air conditioners, refrigerators, tires, etc.) will remain
largely unchanged at this time. The Transfer Station office will be closed
to the public, but a service table has been set up outside the office to
allow residents to declare disposal of these types of items or ask any
questions. Once declared, residents will be fully responsible to unload
and neatly place these fee-based items in areas designated by Transfer
Station Staff. To speed up the processing of these items, and to limit
person-to-person interactions, collection of fees for these items have been
temporarily suspended.

Construction and Demolition (C&D) Materials and scrap metal
disposal/recycling will continue at this time. Residents wishing to
dispose of C&D Materials must weigh-in using the scale, unload/dispose of
their materials, weigh-out using the scale, and then report to the
information/service table outside of the Transfer Station office for
payment.

Until further notice the Swap Shop will remain closed. Please do not leave
items outside of the shop or on the ground near the Goodwill/Salvation Army
donation boxes. In order to accommodate these temporary changes, traffic
patterns at Transfer Station will be temporarily reorganized in hopes of
streamlining traffic flow and allowing for enhanced social distancing
practices. It is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the new
temporary traffic patterns plan prior to your next visit to the Transfer
Station. Go to:

for more information.

DPW Staff will maintain six to ten feet of separation from other
individuals and all users of the Transfer Station are strongly urged to
follow similar distancing guidelines. Traffic patterns may be adjusted to
ensure proper separation of vehicles and individuals at the pit. Residents
may experience some delays.

Due to the fluidity of the overall COVID-19 crisis, this plan is subject to
change. Please be sure to check the Town website regularly for updated
news and information. We ask you to drive safely within the Transfer
Station and thank you for your understanding and cooperation with staff
and/or volunteers as we work through this serious situation.
