Kick off vacation week right!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

 

Saturday (tomorrow as I write this) will be a busy day in
Hanover.  Let’s hope the weather holds!  Here are some
highlights regarding three big events that will help us to kick off vacation
week just right!

 

HYAA softball playing girls are reminded about the
re-scheduled Softball Opening
Day
– now set to be held this Saturday (instead of during last
week’s rain) at B. Everett Hall Field.  Contact your coach for
details regarding your team’s arrival time.

 

SSYMCA Healthy Kids Day

Saturday,
12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

An
Afternoon of Fun

Games, Busy Bee Jumpers, Speed Stairs, WATD Radio, Face
Painting and much more!

 

 

Celebrate
Earth Day at the Hanover Mall

Saturday
from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

 

EVENTS
INCLUDE:

Exhibits.  South Shore
Recycling Cooperative (municipal recycling programs), BigBelly Solar, Go Green
Global Recycling, Covanta SEMASS (mercury reduction), Mass Recycles Paper,
Sustainable South Shore, the Green Connection, and the North and South River
Watershed Association (Greenscapes), to name a few. 

Demonstrati ons.  The South
Shore Natural Science center will bring their resident Owl for visits at 10 am
and 1:30 pm at Center Court.  Learn how to compost your kitchen scraps,
plant and care for a baby tree, and make tote bags, iPod cases, and more from
plastic shopping bags.    

What
I can do to Save the Planet”
.  Hundreds of area students
submit essays in a contest sponsored by Hanover Mall, Community Newspaper
Company and the Patriot Ledger.  The Mall will display all entries, and
give a book to every entrant that comes to the event.

What
I can do to Save the Planet”
Awards Ceremony at 1:00 p.m.
in Center Court.

Teen
star McKenzie Rae will perform songs from her new album at noon and 3:00
p.m. in Center Court.

Lisa
and her Big Puppet Friends
will put on  2 musical shows about saving the
environment at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Center Court.

Meet
The Bean, mascot for Beantown Toys.

 

MALL
RETAILERS:

Radio
Shack – Dispose of rechargeable batteries as well as collecting used cell
phones and donate to battered women’s shelters.

Foot
Locker – Collecting old athletic shoes of any brand for Nike’s
“Reuse-A-Shoe” program.  Shoes are transformed into sports surfaces
and playgrounds.

Several
Mall retailers will be showcasing their environmentally preferable products and
practices, and restaurants will be sampling products throughout the day. Look
for the Earth Day flags.

 

MALL
PARKING LOT RECYCLING:

De-clutter
your closets and files, and “re-purpose” unwanted items. 
Proceeds from some collections* will support the South Shore Recycling
Cooperative, too. 

Bring
the following items to the Rockland Bank ATM parking lot from 11:00 a.m. –
3:00 p.m.
for re-use and recycling:

: books, CDs, DVD, VHS tapes (please, no encyclopedias or magazines)

: clothing, shoes, stuffed animals, sheets and towels, small
rugs

documents shredded on site.  First box at no charge, each additional box @
$5.00 (no binders or large clips, please).

EOMS :  TVs,
computer monitors @$5.00, other electronics (CPUs, keyboards, VCRs, etc.) no
charge.

Harbors Environmental Services, Allied Waste, Work N Gear, and the South Shore
