Dear fellow Hanoverians:
The Hanover Woman’s Club, Juniors, a local volunteer organization, is
celebrating its 55th anniversary. To mark the occasion, the club has
arranged a display of memorabilia showcasing its decades of service. The
exhibit is open to the public on the second floor of the John Curtis
Library throughout September.
The club’s first meeting was held on May 27, 1970, at the library. Bylaws
were established, the iris chosen as the club flower, and plans made for
future meetings. On June 17, 1970, the Director of Junior Clubs from the
GFWC of Massachusetts officially presented the club’s charter. Two
charter members remain active today—one turned 100 this past May and the
other celebrated her 90th birthday.
Over the decades, the club has led countless projects focused on education,
the arts, and civic engagement. In 1971, they launched a scholarship
program for Hanover High School seniors—awarding students in the arts,
community service, and academics (the latter for children of club members).
The awards continue today.
Candidates Night, a springtime tradition before town elections, began in
1972 and still takes place annually. Children have enjoyed events such as
Halloween parades, Breakfast with Santa, and trips to the Boston Symphony
for kids. A major accomplishment came in 1975, when the club raised $2,500
to install “Electric Arms” on 19 school buses, improving student
safety.
The club also led fundraising for the original bandstand at Sylvester Field
and contributed to the current one, along with the nearby Veterans
Memorial. In 1991 Members joined five local churches to create the Hanover
Food Pantry, which they continue to operate and support.
Members have attended GFWC state meetings and received numerous awards.
Most recently, the club was honored for contributions to domestic violence
awareness, its continued food pantry work, and supporting a Hanover High
student attending a youth leadership program.
Recent projects include crafting comfort bears for local police and fire
departments, sewing blankets for teens at the Home for Little Wanderers,
and assembling 44 “Birthday in a Box” kits for children experiencing
homelessness. Each Christmas, members collect gifts for female veterans at
the VA Medical Center in Brockton. The club’s annual Holiday Auction
raises funds for the food pantry, Council on Aging, library, and VNA. Stop
by the John Curtis Library and view the club’s display.
New members (age 18+) are welcome and encouraged to join by emailing the
membership chair at embhanover@verizon.net .
