Wingmasters Program at John Curtis Library

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Jim Parks of Wingmasters will present “Music To Our Ears–How Birds of Prey
Communicate” on Tuesday, August 14, at 2:00 p.m. The program, which
features a number of live raptors, is recommended for ages six and older.

Birds of prey have a lot to say! They are the focus of WINGMASTERS
education programs. All of their program birds are nonreleasable rescue
birds from species that are native to New England (not captive-bred
exotics). The audience will learn the birds’ individual stories as well as
each species’ natural history. They will hear the birds’ different sounds
and explore their meanings and their MUSIC!

The program is funded by the Friends of the Library. Please register from
the Calendar section of the library’s website, www.hanovermass/library.
For more information, call 781-826-272, extension 4, or email the
children’s librarian at lcampbell@ocln.org.

Kindergarten School Bus Orientation at John Curtis Library

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Thursday, August 30 the John Curtis Library will host its annual school bus
event for children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall. Come to
the library at 10:30 a.m. to listen to some stories about riding the school
bus. Two buses will arrive at 11:00; children board the buses, meet the
drivers, learn about bus rules, and go for a ride to both elementary
schools and back to the library.
The program is intended to help ease the transition to taking the bus to
school and to familiarize children with the bus routine before school
starts.

Registration is not required, but is kindly requested so that the good
folks at the library and bus company can have an idea how many children to
expect. To register, please go to the Calendar section of the library’s
website, www.hanovermass.com/library. For more information, call
781-826-2972, extension 4, or email the children’s librarian at
lcampbell@ocln.org.

Blue lights and other displays of support

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

After fielding several questions about the blue lights in town, I thought I
would send the following e-blast:

Please join your neighbors in honoring Hanover resident and Weymouth Police
Sergeant Michael Chesna who was killed in the line of duty last week.
Please consider displaying a “thin blue line” sign or flag, a blue and/or
black ribbon, or a blue light this summer. The displays I have seen to
date are heartwarming – let’s add to them and keep them going so his widow
and children…and all of the police families in Hanover…know how much we
care about them!

I have also seen a re-emergence of the “No Hate-Choose Kind” signs and
similar displays. It’s all good. Thanks for your consideration of and
participation in the “Spirit of Hanover”.

Science Tellers – Wild West – The Mystery of the Golden Piano

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Science Tellers–Wild West–The Mystery of the Golden Piano

Monday July 30, 11:00 a.m. at the John Curtis Library

Grab your spurs and journey with the good folks at the library to the Wild
West, where a legendary bank-robbing outlaw is back in town and about to
strike again! After the Sheriff mysteriously vanishes, two young kids must
saddle up to foil the great heist — but not before stopping a runaway
train, escaping an abandoned mine shaft and discovering how a mysterious
piano can play an ‘instrumental’ part in putting a rotten cowboy back
behind bars. Throughout this absolutely wild adventure story, volunteers
from the audience will help explore the fascinating science behind chemical
reactions, acids and bases, combustion, air pressure, inertia and more.
Don’t miss this classic action-packed western with ‘notes’ of
science!

Please register from the Calendar section of the library’s website,

RIP Sgt. Michael Chesna

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I got back late last night from the New England Municipal Clerk’s Institute
in Plymouth, NH. It was an amazing week, and I am grateful to the town for
supporting my attendance there.

I came back to be a part of one of the most awe-inspiring and humbling
events I have ever been a part of, the funeral of Hanover resident Sgt.
Michael Chesna. I’ve never been around a more polite and respectful
group of people of that magnitude in my entire life. Rest In Peace Sergeant
Chesna. Your profession and our town did you proud today.

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier announced that Wednesday,
August 15th is the last day to register to vote in the State Primary
Election. The Registrar’s/Town Clerk’s Office will be open from 8:00
a.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday the 15th.

Thanks to new legislation that went into effect in 2016, any Hanover
citizen who is sixteen years of age or older is eligible to register to
vote. Citizens who will be eighteen on or before Election Day, September
4th, 2018 will then be eligible to actually vote. Once registered and 18
years of age, individuals will be eligible to vote in all elections
thereafter, including the State (Gubernatorial) Election in November.

Citizens of Hanover may conveniently register to vote or change their party
status on-line, by mail or in person. The link for on-line registration is
here: https://www.sec.state.ma.us/OVR . If residents choose to register
by mail they should download the “Massachusetts Mail-In Voter
Registration Form” found here:
http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/eleifv/howreg.htm and mail the completed
form to the Hanover Town Clerk’s Office.

If residents wish to register to vote in person, they may do so at two
convenient locations: Hanover Town Hall or the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

“The State Primary Election is the precursor to the larger State Election
in November, but it nevertheless features a number of interesting
elections,” said Harder-Bernier. “The Republican ballot has races for
Governor, Senator in Congress, and Attorney General. There are also
contested races on the Democratic ballot for Governor and State Secretary,
among others. The Libertarians fielded just one candidate for their newly
created party, but I expect two unusual write-in campaigns on the
Democratic ballot to draw interest.”

Questions may be directed to Hanover Town Clerk Catherine Harder-Bernier at
(781) 826-5000 x1079 or by e-mail at Catherine.harderbernier@hanover-ma.gov
, or Senior Registrar Nancy Goldthwait at (781) 826-5000 x1082 or
nancy.goldthwait@hanover-ma.gov .
