Hanover Day needs volunteers

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The 10th Annual Hanover Day is a little over a month away and they are in
great need of volunteers for June 19th (Friday night) and June 20th
(Saturday). They have 2 hour shifts available to sell carnival tickets on
Friday night or Saturday all day/night; there are two people assigned to
selling carnival tickets. Those who helped out last year volunteered with
a friend, reconnected with a friend, or made a new one. Any time that you
are able to give helps; it is a great weekend for Hanover and fun to
participate. They also have the following shifts available; teenagers
needing community service hours are very welcome!

Friday Night Set Up: 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Saturday Volunteers: 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. (set up and vendor
assistance), or 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (vendor support/runners), or 3:00
p.m. – 7:00 p.m. (vendor breakdown and carnival shifts), or 7:00 p.m. –
11:00 p.m. (carnival shifts).

Please visit www.hanoverday.com to register. Any questions? Please email

Support the John Curtis Library book room

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Do you enjoy reading the latest novels or are you a Barnes and Noble
regular? Do you belong to a book group? Do you have a stash of former
bestsellers that are just gathering dust on your shelves? Please consider
donating now your gently used books, CDs, DVDs, and puzzles to the Book
Sale Room at the John Curtis Free Library.

All donations may be dropped off at the library during regular library
hours in the marked bins in the Book Sale Room. Everything will be sorted
and organized by our volunteers for easy searching.
Please do some spring cleaning now for the library and help fund extra
programs, book acquisitions, and museum/cultural passes for all.

Remember that adult and children’s books and more are for sale,
year-round, in the Book Sale Room at our library for bargain-basement
prices. It’s a great way to stock up on your summer reading!

Thank you in advance for your loyal support and generosity! For more
information, please contact Tracy Marchetti at tjmarchetti@verizon.com .

Hanover Election and Mock Election results

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

With approximately 5% of Hanover’s registered voters appearing at the polls
today, Elizabeth Corbo and John Geary were the victors in the one contested
race on the ballot for School Committee. Brian Barthelmes was re-elected
to the Board of Selectmen, and newcomer David Delaney will be joining him
on the Board.

Virginia Gilmartin won a write-in seat on the Housing Authority, and
re-elected Library Trustee Joan Thomas topped the ticket with the most
votes of all on the ballot. Others elected today included Frank Greco to
the Board of Assessors, Richard Farwell to the Board of Health, John
Benevides, Louis Truscello and Robert Heywood to the Board of Public Works,
and Doug Thomson as Moderator.

Of particular additional note is the fact that Hanover High School’s
student body turned out in record numbers at the Mock Election last
Thursday. Corbo and Geary won the two School Committee seats as in the
Regular Election, but the most encouraging news of the day was that fully
59% of the students voted in the Mock Election, as they far outdistanced
their parent’s turnout at the polls.

Congratulations to HHS ’15 student Andrew Nelson for running a very
successful Mock Election, and to his peers for their large voting turnout.
There is great hope for Hanover’s voters with those numbers!

Saturday is a big day!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

I have four items for your “to do” list for Saturday, as follows:

1) Vote! The Annual Town Election runs from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on
Saturday at Hanover High School. I challenge all of you to exceed my
prediction of 625 voters at the polls. Let’s do it!

2) Put out your food pantry donations! The Postal Workers Food Drive is
Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. The pantry could use pancake mix and
syrup, peanut butter and jelly, mac and cheese, coffee, juice, canned
fruit, canned chicken, stew, and canned ham. Also paper products, dish
detergent, bath soap, cleaning products, toothpaste and toothbrushes are in
short supply right now.

3) Fill out the Hanover survey! It can be found at
www.hanover-ma.gov/survey and is due Sunday, May 10th.

4) Plan to have a delightful Mother’s Day on Sunday. ?

Town Meeting update

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover Town Meeting dispensed quickly with the 17 articles on the Special
Town Meeting warrant this evening, and then moved quickly on to the Annual
Town Meeting articles.

Discussion ensued on items such as the School Resource Officer and
technology expenditures (funded in the budget article), the new math
program (which passed), but most of the facilities expenditures in the
middle of warrant passed without comment.

As expected the Community Preservation articles generated significant
discussion. The Veteran’s Honor Garden article was amended such that the
motion to refer was sent to a new committee (rather than CPC), the Town
Hall restoration project passed, and the request for funding for new
windows was referred back to the CPC.

We adjourned after completing Article 42, and will re-convene tomorrow (as
I write this), Tuesday, May 5th at 7:00 p.m. at Hanover High School.

See you there!

New math program proposed

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
It’s not every day that the Town of Hanover’s Schools decide to upgrade
their math program. So, when an article appeared on the Annual Town
Meeting Warrant to do just that, I went looking for information. My
youngest is now a senior at the high school and hasn’t brought home a
backpack notice in years, so I am a little out of the loop. I am guessing
some of you may be, also. Hence, this e-mail!

The very best source of information that I found is this webpage:
http://www.hanoverschools.org/v2020/ . I just spent an hour watching
videos, reading budgets, and hearing what teachers and students have to say
about the Vision 2020 program. Spend 10 minutes or spend 100. Regardless,
I urge you to check it out.

The Advisory Committee has voted to support the $600,000 purchase of the
new math program using free cash. What do you think? I heartily encourage
you to be an educated voter. Then, go to Town Meeting on Monday and chime
in. See you there.
