Finally, a memorial service for Sophy Hansen, beloved Hanover teacher

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Sophy Richmond Church Hansen passed away on May 12, 2020. She was 98.
Sophy was an elementary school teacher in the Salmond and Cedar Schools in
Hanover.

Sophy had written out what psalms and hymns she wanted for her funeral at
her beloved St. Andrews Church. She had seen her twin sister’s Frances’
funeral at St. Andrews seven years before. The church was full. But in May
of 2020, there could be no funeral for Sophy due to the Covid pandemic
restrictions. As those who buried loved ones during the pandemic will
remember, there was only a small graveside ceremony only 10 people could
attend, masked, and 10 feet apart.

Hanover and Sophy’s family will finally have a memorial service for Sophy,
at the St. Andrews Church she loved, on Sunday, June 2, at 11:00 a.m.
Sophy’s chosen “Amazing Grace” will finally be played in her honor.

After the service, there will be a dedication of a daffodil garden in St.
Andrews yard, to Sophy and her twin sister, Frances. For more information,
please contact Deborah Hansen Hollenberg at deborah.hollenberg@gmail.com .

Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

Hanover’s Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27, is scheduled to start at
10:00 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Church and end at the Veterans Memorial. The
parade route includes remembrances at the Hanover Center Cemetery, Hanover
Town Hall, and the Sylvester School World War II Memorial. Parking is
available at the Veterans Memorial, located next to B. Everett Hall Field,
Saint Mary’s Church, and Center School.

Once at the cemetery, the parade will honor and memorialize various Veteran
plots, including the World War I soldiers, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier,
the police and fire deceased, the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign
Wars memorials.

Following, the parade will march toward the Civil War Memorial (by the
cannons across from Town Hall). There, those in attendance will memorialize
the Civil War as well as the Korean, Vietnam, and World War II Veterans.

The parade will then march to the Sylvester School building to memorialize
World War I soldiers and then end at the Hanover Veterans Memorial where
the Memorial Day Ceremony will be held.

Please note that aspects of this parade are subject to change at a moment’s
notice, weather depending.

Hanover’s Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at the Veterans’ Memorial at
approximately 11:30 a.m., following the parade. The ceremony includes an
opening prayer, remarks from our Veterans, and a roll call during the
wreath-laying. The memorial is located at 495 Hanover Street, next to the
B. Everett Hall Field.

Cast your ballot in the Annual Town Election

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

The Hanover Town Clerk’s Office is already seeing a huge uptick in interest
surrounding the Annual Town Election over prior years. Please see the
below information and updates to help you to make sure you are able to cast
your ballot!

Monday, May 13th at 5:00 p.m. is the last day and time to submit a Vote by
Mail application to the Town Clerk’s Office. It has to be RECEIVED in the
office by that day – not postmarked. The office will be open from 8:00
a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Monday to receive your applications! Vote by Mail is
available to ANYONE without an excuse.

Extra election staff have been hired to help cover the Town Clerk’s Office
for just this coming week – May 13 – 17th. As a result, IF YOU QUALIFY for
an absentee ballot, unlike previous weeks, you may request one without an
appointment. You can vote by absentee ballot if:
–You will be away from Hanover on Election Day, May 18th
–You have a religious belief that prevents you from voting at your polling
location on Election Day or
–You have a disability that prevents you from voting at your polling
location
You will sign an affidavit under the pains and penalties of perjury that
you qualify before you will be issued a ballot. The Town Clerk’s Office
will be open without an appointment just next week on Monday from 8:00 a.m.
– 5:00 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Wednesday
from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 12 noon.

In-person voting for all registered voters on Election Day, Saturday May
18th, will be from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Hanover High School. You may
park in the front or in the back as both doors will be open. There will be
extra handicapped-accessible parking in the back, along with Election Day
Voter-only parking spots also in the back. There will likely be fewer
people electioneering in the front!

ALL ballots must be received by 6:00 p.m. on Saturday in order to be
counted. If you still need to return your Vote by Mail ballot, please
deposit it in the secure camera-monitored ballot drop box in front of Town
Hall. Election workers empty the box and process those ballots every day.

Annual Town Meeting is over – on to the Election!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

When the motion to dissolve the Annual Town Meeting was made at 10:18 p.m.
Tuesday evening, a cheer erupted from the voters still remaining in the
auditorium at Hanover High School. I’m not sure who was happier, those who
labored long and hard for months to make the past couple of evenings
happen, or those who feared reconsideration of the override motion. :)

484 people checked in to Town Meeting this evening; the largest number this
32-year resident remembers for a second night of Town Meeting in at least
15 years. We bandied about challenging zoning topics like the MBTA Overlay
District zoning requirements (ultimately referred back to the Planning
Board for further study) and accessory dwelling units (approved after an
amendment from the floor), bought a lawn mower and a woodchipper, and made
sure our men in blue have new cruisers and radios. I am personally most
excited about the 3-year dog license option. :) As the Moderator noted,
we got through more articles in 27 minutes this evening than we did in all
of one long night last night. A total of 45 articles later, and the
meeting is over.

Please join me in a shout out to the Advisory Committee from all of us for
their particularly extraordinary efforts during this exceptionally
challenging budget analysis year! Their time and energy seem boundless to
me sometimes, and their dedication to their work is very appreciated by all
of us.

And so, we’re on to the election. There are two contested races (Board of
Assessors and School Committee) and two “vote for two” races (School
Committee and Select Board) in addition to the override question. As a
reminder, the override has to pass at both the Town Meeting (it did) and at
the Town Election (stay tuned) in order to take effect. The deadline to
apply for a Vote by Mail ballot is Monday, May 13th. Your application has
to be received in the Town Clerk’s Office by that date in order to be
processed. Due to a vacancy in the Assistant Town Clerk’s position, an
appointment needs to be made directly with the Town Clerk in order to vote
in person absentee, which is also only available to those who qualify.
Please go to
http://atotw.com/maillist/lt.php?tid=AVY3XvSSzKyAWEM5S8howAyjXHkktPwUj0Kkpdl4u/xoqLt7nDP4RqoN783ZLADJ
for more information. Most everyone else should just plan to vote on
person on Election Day, Saturday, May 18th. The polls will be open from
8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Hanover High School!

One sidebar quick story before I send this e-blast…on Friday of last
week, Hanover’s newest US citizen, an immigrant from Ukraine, arrived in
the Town Clerk’s Office with questions about voter registration and Town
Meeting. The deadline to register to vote in this Town Meeting and Town
Election had passed, but as a new citizen, there was a legal exception to
the deadline for him. He also wanted to know when and where Town Meeting
was going to be held. We handed him a Warrant, a copy of his voter
registration, and related instructions, and sent him along. This evening,
around 9:45 p.m., I noticed “A” for the first time, sitting middle row
center, at Hanover High, and holding his hand high when the Moderator
called for a show of hands.

I’m so proud of us. Great job Hanover. See you in 11 days at the polls!
