Walnut Hill Garden Club’s Plant Sale

Dear fellow Hanoverians:

*HANOVER’S WALNUT HILL GARDEN CLUB PREPARES FOR PLANT SALE MAY 19th*

*SALE FEATURES PLANTS THAT THRIVE IN LOCAL CONDITIONS*
* *
Walnut Hill Garden Club of Hanover will hold it’s biennial public
plant sale on *Saturday, May 19th from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. *at
*Riley Hall *of the* First Congregational Church *located at 17 Silver
Street (corner of Silver and Hanover Streets) in Hanover.
Co-presidents and sale organizers Nancy Arienti and Donna Kirby report
the sale will feature a large selection of plants from member gardens,
all at affordable prices. Included for sunny spots are colorful
daylilies, iris, Shasta daisies, and ornamental grasses, shade
dwelling hosta, astilbe and other hardy plants, plus ground covers,
shrubs and more.

Said Arienti, “We are digging and dividing plants now in our
members’ gardens, so we will have nice big clumps of hardy local
plants. All will do well in our local environment. There will also be
divisions of the great plants featured on our traffic islands, like
the big white Shasta daisies and blue irises on the island in front of
St. Mary’s Church. Once established, many of these plants are
drought tolerant, especially important when we may have a very dry
summer.”

This is the third time the Walnut Hill sale will be held at theFirst
Congregational Church’s Riley Hall. “The Riley Hall is ideally
situated since it’s right in the center of town with great parking
in front and behind the hall,” offered Arienti. “We have been
alternating years for our plant sale with our sister club in town, the
Hanover Garden Club, so there will always be a town plant sale
organized by one or the other of our clubs offering the chance to buy
hardy plants at great prices.” She suggests shoppers come early for
the best selection, and recommends you bring plant trays, crates and
boxes to carry purchases home.
Sales proceeds will benefit Hanover beautification projects.

Hanover observes National Peace Officers Memorial Day

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
From the Town Manager’s Office:
Today, May 15th, is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a day set
aside to honor fallen heroes of law enforcement. The holiday was first
observed on October 1, 1961, when Congress asked President John F.
Kennedy to designate May 15 to honor police officers. President
Kennedy agreed, and signed the bill into law on October 1, 1962. In
1994, President Bill Clinton enhanced the observance and directed that
the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff on May 15. More
recently, President George W. Bush observed the following: “Peace
Officers Memorial Day and Police Week pay tribute to the local, State,
and Federal law enforcement officers who serve and protect us with
courage and dedication.”
Please join Chief Sweeney and the men and women of law enforcement in
Hanover by sharing in this solemn observation of the courage and
dedication of our police professionals.
Thanks to Town Manager Troy Clarkson for this information. Mr.
Clarkson may be reached at troy.clarkson@hanover-ma.gov
