My wife and I have two children in the Hanover School system.

I work in the software development arena for a worldwide financial
company where I see on a daily basis the skill sets our children will
need to compete in a global economy.

*What are the major issues confronting the town which involve your
office? Please express your opinion on these issues and how you
propose to deal with them.*

The Hanover school system lacks educational consistency. Hanover’s
MCAS scores show a competitive system when compared to surrounding
towns. However Hanover students’ SAT and AP scores fall below state
average, and fall behind most of our neighbors. The last publicly
available AP test results show more students fail than pass the exam.

I question how the system uses technology. A question I should have
pursued 11 years ago when I volunteered for the School Technology
Committee. At the initial meeting, the technology director excitedly
explained to me how the school system had 1000 computers all wired to
the Internet. I asked what the computer equipment was used for. The
response, “Good question, it’s something we’d like to find
out”.

Flash-forward to the present, what are the computers used for in the
classroom? Does the school system really need 1200 computers?

I want to correct the system’s failure to properly educate our youth
in what’s needed for today’s workplace.

I don’t believe the answer is giving the school system more money.
The school system has the money. It’s a matter of allocating it
correctly. I’ve compared Hanover schools spending against
surrounding towns, and found our administrative costs exceed state
average, and those of surrounding towns.

Hanover Woman’s Softball League is looking for players who have
experience playing softball and are 18 years old and up. This is a low
key recreational summer league and games are played on Wednesday
nights at 6:00 p.m. The season runs from June 20th to August 29th.

During the month of May, the John Curtis Free Library will be
accepting your gently-used cell phones to donate to “Cell Phones for
Soldiers”. Cell Phones for Soldiers is a non-profit organization
dedicated to providing deployed and returning troops cost-free methods
to communicate with family while serving in the United States
military. The organization was founded by two Norwell teenagers in
2004, and in 2011, served over a half a million soldiers. For more

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
The Barn Babies Animal Program will be appearing at the John Curtis
Library on Saturday, May 26th. A variety of baby animals will be at
the library for children to visit with, hold and pet.

Free tickets are available at the children’s room desk for four
30-minute sessions:
11:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 12:00 p.m. – 12:30
p.m., and 12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Attendance is very limited; it is
recommended that those who wish to attend pick up tickets right away.

The program is funded by the Friends of the John Curtis Library. For

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Well, it’s that time of the year again! Residents are encouraged to
plan to attend the Special and Annual Town Meetings scheduled to be
held beginning next week, Monday, May 7th. The Special Town Meeting,
which is conducted first to conclude any business related to Fiscal
Year 2012, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the new Hanover High School. The
Annual Town Meeting (ATM) commences at 8:00 p.m. that same evening
also at HHS.
Regardless of whether you have been to Town Meeting for 30 straight
years or are a newcomer to town and a Town Meeting rookie, suffice it
to say that Town Meeting remains one of the most important events in
the life of our town and deserves your attendance. Decisions are made
that impact our daily lives and even sometimes the lives of our
children’s children. It is surely the epitome of small-town
democracy in action, and often quite entertaining, too!
There are 60 Articles on this year’s ATM warrant. Town Meeting
participants will decide what time to adjourn Monday night, and if
needed, when to continue for a second or even sometimes a third night.
Town Elections will follow on Saturday, May 12th from 8:00 a.m. –
6:00 p.m. Stay tuned to “Around Town on the Web” for updates and
more details on the issues that affect all of us!

Dear fellow Hanoverians:
The Hanover Open Space Committee and the Cardinal Cushing Center will
be co-sponsoring a public walk on the Center’s beautiful woodland
property bordering the Third Herring Brook. Please join them on
Saturday, May 12th at 9:00 am. There is ample parking in the school
lot opposite the Chapel. Please be sure to bring bug repellant, and
dress appropriately, as there are ticks in this wooded area. The walk
will be approximately a mile and a half in length. They will meet in
front of the Chapel. They look forward to introducing you to this
wonderful area in Hanover and to this great institution. The main
entrance to the property is located at 405 Washington Street, near the
intersection of Route 53 and Route 139 in Hanover.

Hanover OSC was chartered to ensure that the town’s rural character
is maintained and enhanced both through protection of existing
resources and acquisition of new properties. It is responsible for
planning and facilitating the improvement of open space, enhancing
access to open space and raising awareness of land use issues. The OSC
is also interested in protecting land that is environmentally
sensitive, could be used for passive recreation or is important for
conserving the look and feel of the town. The goal is to retain the
natural beauty and heritage of the town.

The Open Space Committee would also like to hear from people who are
interested in more information on the work of the Committee. The
Committee meets regularly at 7:30 p.m., on the first Monday of each
month at Hanover Town Hall.

Harbour Choral Arts presents: “Songs of Life/ Chansons de la Vie”

For the fourth straight year, Ryan Shea, Matt Shea, and James Wheeler
will host the Hanover Alumni Speed and Agility Camp. This Hanover Park
and Recreation program is open to all Hanover youth athletes (ages 9 –
18) who wish to improve their fitness and athletic performance prior
to the fall sports season. The Alumni Speed and Agility Camp teaches
the proper techniques to various game related movements that will
sharpen the athlete’s understanding of how to react to different
game-related scenarios. In addition, the camp educates athletes on
proper kinematics and stretching to limit sports-related injuries.

Dates: Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 6:15 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. throughout
the following dates:
Session 1: July 2nd – July 20th
Session 2: July 23rd – August 10th
